“Understatement of the year. She’s doing this on purpose.”

“Doing what?

“Messing everything up!”

Willa laughs, “Like what? Besides your attitude.”

“I don’t know.”

“Tell me what happened with her, Tre. Why do you hate her so much?”

“I flew halfway around the world to propose to her and found her in bed with her boss.”

“That’ll do it.”

Shaking my head, I sigh at the memory. “We’d been together for two years. Had been talking about marriage for months. When she got a temporary job transfer to France, she called me every day, crying about how much she missed me. I felt bad for taking so long to propose, and she was so sad every time we talkedthat I took a few weeks off work and flew out to seal the deal. She was busy sealing deals of her own.”

“That’s why you went to France?”

“Yep. Spent the rest of my time there drinking in my room. Not my finest hour.”

“Tre, that’s horrible…”

“Yeah, that’s why I don’t drink much anymore.”

Willa shakes her head. “No, I mean Marla. Did she say anything when she got caught?”

“Oh, just the standard. ‘It happened one time. It was a mistake. He means nothing.’”

“I get it. You were busy planning on forever while she was in the process of blowing up your life.”

“Seems to be a running theme with her. She’s still actively trying to ruin my life.”

“I didn’t realize you were so dramatic,” she teases, giggling. “Don’t let her ruin this for you, Tre.” Yawning, she plumps up the pillow under her head. “She took something away from you back then, but she doesn’t have the ability to do that now. You’ve worked too hard to let her get in the way of something you’ve wanted for years. Don’t give her that power.” Yawning again, her eyes rest as slits while she fights to keep them open.

“Go to sleep, Gem.”

“No.” She shakes her head. “I want to keep hearing your voice.”

“Okay, how about this? Prop up your phone on the nightstand. I’ll stay connected until you fall asleep. Yeah?”

She nods and sets up her phone before collapsing back onto the bed.

“Hey, that’s my pillow!” I tease.

“Duh. It smells like you, and I miss you,” she mumbles while snuggling into it, eyes fully closed now.

“I miss you too,” I say, even though my head and heart are screamingI love you…
