Chapter 41
Hawk
We’d been driving aroundfor hours and were no closer to finding Stella. I was beginning to think we had some bad information, but I kept my opinion to myself as James furiously worked from the backseat. Lucian and Devlin were in a battle to see who the broodiest bastard could be, and so far, it was a tie.
“Are you sure your system wasn’t hacked?” Lucian asked, and I rolled my eyes as Devlin met his gaze in the rear-view mirror.
“My system is secure and it wasn’t hacked. We’re just not looking in the right place,” Devlin huffed as we rolled down another road in the Flats.
“It’s like they disappeared,” James remarked without looking up from his laptop.
Everyone was checking in as they cleared another street, but no one had caught a glimpse of them since the cameras saw them entering the Flats almost six hours ago. I tried not to think about what Stella was going through, but pictures from the past played like a nightmarish movie in my mind. Visions of Adrik beating her, raping her, and degrading her were playing in a loop, and I rubbed my eyes in an attempt to dislodge the memories.
“I’ve been looking into Hailey’s father,” Lucian remarked, and I spun in my seat and looked him dead in the eyes.
“You need to let that sleeping dog lie, Lucian. Nothing good can come from opening that can of worms,” I warned him, and something flashed in his eyes.
“You know who it is, don’t you?” he asked, and I sighed deeply as I took my gaze back to the window. “I don’t understand the big secret. Stella endured something horrible, and I just want to make sure the person who hurt her pays.”
Devlin glanced at me, and I knew the madman had something to add. Why wouldn’t they just let it go? By bringing it up, there could’ve been deadly consequences. I clenched and unclenched my fists, waiting for another stupid remark from one of them.
“I know who it is, and Hawk’s right, there’s no need to discuss it anymore,” Devlin said with thinly veiled anger, and I snapped my head toward him.
James stopped typing, and Lucian leaned forward before demanding, “Tell me who it is. I want to make sure he pays.”
“How the fuck do you think you know who it is?” I asked, and Devlin smirked at me.
“I have access to every database the government does,” Devlin remarked, and Lucian sat back in the seat.
“Bullshit. I have networks you couldn’t ever have the clearance to see, so how did you find out who it was?” Lucian asked with a huff.
“One thing you should know about Callahan Cyber Security, brother,” Devlin started, spitting the last word out like it was poison on his tongue. “We have back doors to every system we’re a part of. Five years ago, the government signed an exclusive contract with us, allowing Callahan to provide security for their networks.”
“What all have you seen?” Lucian asked with some hesitation, and Devlin’s face broke into an evil smile as he met his brother’s eyes in the rear-view mirror.
“I’ve seen every step you’ve taken for the last ten years,” Devlin answered, and I had to admit, the silence that followed gave me pause.
What exactly did Devlin see that has Lucian so on edge?
