“You’re too good for me,” Colton said and kissed me softly.
“So, it’s settled. We’ll move you to the bigger cabin tomorrow, and you’ll stay here until the madman can figure out where she is and what she wants. In the meantime, we’ll get the house wired with cameras and let the school know what’s going on. Does that seem okay to everyone?”
“I think so,” Colton said.
“I do too,” I replied, and Gunner stood from his chair.
“I’ll contact Devlin and get him working on finding her, and I want Basher to take over the bar tonight. He needs to learn, and the best way is trial by fire,” Gunner suggested.
“Thanks, Gunner. I don’t really want to be away from them tonight. Even though Anna is clueless, Matthew seems to be on edge.”
“No worries, brother. We’ve got your back.” Gunner cut his eyes to me and added, “And, Stella, nice hit. You’re going to fit in perfectly around here.”
He walked away, headed toward the bar, and Colton turned his attention to me. “What did Skid give you?”
I opened the shirt and looked at it before laughing into the air. Turning it so Colton could see it, he laughed and leaned over to kiss me. The shirt had the DHMC logo on it and said in bold letters, ‘Property of Hawk. Don’t make me hurt you.’
“It fits you, darlin’,” he said as he helped me stand. “Let’s go check on the kids.”
As we walked through the room, a few of the brothers winked at me and smiled as Colton kept my hand in his. I’d guess standing up for yourself earns respect within the club, but I only hit him to make him leave me alone. No one had the right to touch me or anyone else, without permission.
Outside the clubhouse was much quieter than inside, and I mentioned to Colton, “I left the kids with Hailey and Jacob. They were playing with Jasmine and Zeus when I left. I hope that was okay.”
He stopped and pulled me closer to him. “You made the right call. Everyone in the club helps out with all the kids, but Hailey and Jacob have babysat for me a few times when Doris was unable to watch them.”
“I just don’t want to step on anyone’s toes. I’m worried about everything, so I promised Anna and Matthew we could have a slumber party tonight.”
He brought his hand to my cheek and brushed it across my skin, igniting a fire inside me as he said, “You’ve done more for them in the last few days than she’s ever done for them. I can’t thank you enough for being there for us.” He leaned over and kissed me, showing me without words how much he cared. When he pulled away, he whispered, “I love you.”
My eyes grew glassy as I returned, “I love you too. So much.”
As we walked back to the cabin, I realized everything I’d ever wanted was coming true. I had my daughter, a man who loved me, two beautiful children who wanted nothing but love, and a group of outlaw bikers who were ready to kill for all of us. And I couldn’t forget Devlin and James, my newest brother. Together, this group would destroy anyone who even thought about causing pain to any child.
I wished there had been someone to protect me like they did, but knew no matter what that I would do everything in my power to keep Anna, Matthew, and Hailey safe. Even if it meant killing without provocation.
I’d done it before, and I would do it again, but only for those I loved.
