Me:I’m still deciding, but I’m sure you’ll know before I do.
“Let me guess. It’s our mutual friend being a nosy little shit,” Hawkins said, and I turned to him with a smile.
“Good guess. It’s almost like they’ve been listening, even though I know that’s impossible.”
“Not as impossible as you would think,” he mumbled and held his hand out, requesting my phone.
I handed it over without question, and he typed a message before handing it back to me. I looked down at what he sent and burst into laughter as I read it.
Me:Stop being a nosy little bitch. If you have something to add to the conversation, you should be here. Butt out, asshole!
“That’s sure to get their dandruff up,” I said through continued chuckles. “Let’s let them stew while we get something to eat.”
Placing the phone on the table, I grabbed my wallet clutch from the counter and clicked my tongue to call Zeus. My faithful pup walked up to me, and I rubbed the top of his head. “You ready to go for a car ride?”
Zeus barked one time and waited for me to clip his leash onto his collar. Hawkins watched from the center of the room, and I turned to him. “Will you be okay to follow me?”
“I’ll drive us, if that’s okay.”
“I don’t think we’ll all fit on your bike.”
“Then I’ll drive your Jeep, if you’re good with that.”
Shrugging, I handed him the keys and guided Zeus to the front door. Hawkins locked the door behind us and placed his meaty hand on my lower back as he escorted me to my vehicle. I wasn’t used to anyone touching me, but something about him lit a fire deep inside of me that was starting to grow with each passing minute. It didn’t mean I was going to do anything about it, though.
Maybe, one day, I would be able to share myself with another man. For now, I was happy for the companionship and happy that it was Hawkins. He was the only man who’d ever treated me like a lady, even if it was ten years ago, and I’ll always be grateful to him.
Not just for getting me out of hell, but for being a good friend to Hailey.
Now for me to decide if I was ready to confront the pain of the past in order to have a future.
Chapter 10
Hawk
Idrove us to a littletaco truck I’d seen on my drive into town and left Stella and her guard dog in the Jeep while I grabbed us some lunch. The thought of being cooped up inside a restaurant made my skin itch, so I thought a nice picnic would do us both some good. Discussing the past, both hers and mine, was taxing on the soul.
