“Now, I know your lying,” I accused and placed my hand onto the gun.

Zeus lifted his head onto the edge of the table, and I felt him push his body closer to mine. He was a great companion and always knew how to reassure me when my anger, fear, or pain became too much to handle.

“Can I get my phone from my cut?” Hawkins asked, and I gave him a curt nod.

Slowly, he reached into the pocket of his vest and retrieved his phone. Placing it onto the table, he explained, “I’m going to make a phone call, but I need for you to not say anything. Just listen, and if you still think I’m not telling the truth, I’ll leave and tell them I couldn’t find you. Deal?”

Before I could respond, he opened the phone and pressed a button, then the room filled with the sound of ringing. He placed his finger over his mouth, reminding me to keep quiet as someone answered the line.

“Hawk. What did you find?” a man asked.

Hawkins looked down at the phone before he replied, “Hey, Hatchet. Is Hailey around?”

“She’s taking Jasmine for a walk but will be back in a few minutes. What did you find out, man?” the person named Hatchet asked, and I wanted to know his connection to Hailey.

“Nothing yet, but I’ve got some feelers out to see if I can make sense of this all. I wanted to ask her a question, but I guess it will have to wait.” Hawkins lifted his eyes to me.

The sound of something over the line caused this Hatchet person to say, “Hold on, I think that’s her.”

I listened through the phone as an angelic voice sounded softly in the background. “Who is it? Hello?”

“Hailey, it’s Hawk. I wanted to check in with you.”

“Did you find my mom?”

He gave me an intense look as he spoke to her. “I’m looking, sweetheart. I’ll do everything I can, but I can’t make any promises.”

“I know, Hawk, but I just want to talk to her.” He lifted his finger over his lips as she kept speaking. “I understand if you can’t find her, but please, if you do, can you give her a message from me?”

“Sure. What’s the message?”

Tears were building in my eyes as I listened to her angelic voice and they spilled over as she said, “Can you tell her . . . tell her that I love her and nothing would make me happier than to have her in my life.”

“I promise, I’ll tell her if I can get a lead on her. I’ll call back tomorrow and give you an update.”

“Thanks, Hawk.”

The phone disconnected and I rested my forehead on the table, sobbing harder than I had in years. With everything she’d lived through, she still had love in her heart for me, and I had to do everything I could to give her the answers she wanted. Which meant confronting my brother and his merry band of bikers.

I just hoped I wouldn’t have to kill them all to save her from Devlin’s evil hands.
