“I have no problem with my old lady and you being friends. As long as you understand she can kick your ass, we’re all good.”
“Really?” Monroe asked, and I chuckled.
“Maybe,” I replied, and the room broke out into laughter.
“Now that everything’s settled, Skid, you and Grace can head out. I have a few questions for Needles, and then, I promise, it will all be over,” Devlin reasoned, and I looked up at my new friend.
I hugged him before he could stop me, and he went stiff, patting me awkwardly on the back until I released him. Dalton shook his head and pulled me to him, wrapping his arm around my neck. “That’s the last hug, friend,” he taunted and led me out of the tattoo shop.
I climbed onto the back of his bike, and we pulled away from Monroe’s shop. Having my arms wrapped around Dalton, feeling his love, and knowing there were no more monsters to slay, gave me hope that our future would be as happy as we wanted it to be.
As we pulled into the front of the cabin, I smiled to myself, knowing that I found someone who could love me through all the pain and regret I had lived years with. He pushed the solitude away and saved me from my nightmare. My life was darkness and silence, and now, it was happiness and light.
With love, could you ask for anything more?
Chapter 29
Skid
Two weeks later
Ipulled my black gloveson and twisted my neck, popping the kinks out and getting ready for destruction. The information Needles gave Devlin was invaluable and as we walked through the woods leading to the large house tucked off the road, I knew this was the end. Devlin, James, Gunner, Needles, Jackal, and I silently traversed through the trees, and when we approached the side yard, we all stopped.
“Do you have eyes inside the house?” I asked James, who had his cell phone in his hand.
“Inside and out,” he replied and looked down at the device.
Prescott was hosting a Community party tonight, and we arrived before the guests. The sun was already set, and I looked at Needles, seeing the tremor in his hands. The story he told me last week when we got drunk at the lake physically made me sick. I don’t know how he survived what Prescott and his mother put him through, and I still don’t understand how he could have anything to do with that vile woman.
She turned a blind eye to it all, just for the money and prestige that came with being Prescott’s wife. Something caused her to divorce him a few years ago, and since then, she’s depended on Needles for support.
The six of us watched the house, monitoring who came and went for almost half an hour before the camera picked up a little red-haired girl walking into the party with her small hand in that of a much older man. I closed my eyes briefly, needing a moment to push aside the disgust at what they planned for her.
“Let’s move,” Devlin urged, and we took off, staying in the shadows until we got to the back door.
There were fewer cameras on the back of the house, and we used that as our entryway. Gunner popped the lock and silently pushed the door open to reveal a mudroom off the kitchen. Noises from behind the door in front of us were muffled, but I could hear someone speaking about the little girl.
