Biting into her lip, I winked before offering her a hand off the bed. She cleaned up and met me back in the living room. She glanced at her laptop and back to me expectantly.

“I’m going to let you get back to work, but I’ll be here to pick you up at seven for dinner. Papa Dough’s has their tiramisu back on the menu.”

She wiggled her eyebrows at me and licked her lips. Needing to let her get back to work before I shoved my cock between her lips, I kissed her until she was breathless and left her standing in her living room, flushed, with bee-stung lips.

I was almost back at my house when my phone rang. Seeing it was James on my car’s display, I answered the call.

“James, my friend. What’s happening?”

He promised to keep me informed of the investigation into Aubrey, and so far, there had been little updates. I hoped he had some news for me, and when he spoke, I had a feeling this was going to be worse than I’d expected.

“Are you with Aubrey?”

“I just left her at her house and I’m almost home. What’s going on, James? What did you find?”

“Can we meet you at your house? Say thirty minutes?”

“James, do I need to be worried?” I asked as I pulled in front of my house and killed the engine.

“Worried, no. But you will be pissed. We’ll be there soon.”

I hung up and felt bile rising in my throat. Whatever it was, I would handle it so the beautiful woman I planned to make my wife was safe from whoever and whatever tried to destroy her.

Chapter 12

Hayden

Ipaced the back deckwith my phone in my hand and the app open as I watched Aubrey working on her laptop. There was music playing softly in the background and she swayed as she furiously typed away. The sound of crunching gravel pulled my attention away, and I ran my finger over the screen, caressing her face before I turned my phone off and went to open the front door.

Standing on the wraparound porch, I watched as Devlin, James, and Skid exited a large black SUV. Skid was wearing his usual blue jeans and fitted t-shirt, and both James and Devlin were dressed down from their usual suits.

They followed me inside and the tension coming from them had alarm bells ringing in my head. I glanced at Skid, and he was wearing a grim expression as I grabbed beers for all of us and we moved to the back deck. It was getting cooler, so I lit the firepit as they all took a seat. Skid was sitting next to me and Devlin and James were across from us, both rigid and seemingly on edge.

My jaw ticked and I leaned forward, resting my forearms over my knees. Looking at James, I cut my eyes to an observant and silent Devlin as I waited for whatever bomb they were about to drop on me. James glanced at Skid before he took a pull off his beer.

“Spill it. What did you find out?”
