Turning to me, Devlin’s gaze met mine. The bloodthirsty boy who killed to protect his precious lamb and wound up ruling an empire was in front of me. “She’s strong enough to handle a little blood, but I understand what you mean. What do we tell Elise and Amaya?”
“The truth. They’ll be the only ones who can understand what Aubrey needs to get through this.”
We entered the elevator, and when the door opened on the fifth floor, our part-time associate, Freddie, was standing guard at the elevator door. Turning, he spoke quietly, “The kids are both asleep, and they’re in the living room. I didn’t tell them what was going on, but they’re both worried.”
“Thanks, man,” I said, and he nodded before he entered the elevator and the doors closed.
Walking into the living room, I saw my beautiful wife swing her gaze over her shoulder, worry and fear on her face. Elise was sitting next to her, and she jumped up, running into Devlin’s open arms. He pulled her into a tight hug, whispering into her hair. Amaya stood, and I walked to her, pulling her in for a bruising kiss.
She gripped onto my shirt and her soft moans tamped down the growing rage, giving me her light and goodness, pushing the monster down. Pulling back, she looked up at me with lustful eyes, and I wanted nothing more than to ravage my wife. “Is everything okay?”
I smiled down at her and glanced over my shoulder at Devlin and Elise. Exhaling, he nodded, and I urged Amaya to sit down as Devlin guided Elise to the couch opposite us. My phone chimed and I read the message that Hayden and Aubrey would be here in less than five minutes.
“Hayden and Aubrey will be here soon. Tonight . . . Aubrey was attacked in Hayden’s cabin.” Both women gasped and tears filled their eyes. I swallowed deeply and pushed through. “She’s okay, and we were able to get to her before she was seriously hurt.”
“Who attacked her?” Amaya asked as she gripped my hand tighter.
I’m sure she was remembering what Natalia went through, and I hated to bring those painful memories back to the surface, but I needed her to know what was going to happen tonight. My wife wouldn’t deny me the vengeance Aubrey deserved.
“It was Hayden’s stepbrother, Tucker. Aubrey was at home and he broke in and attacked her,” Devlin replied, and both women sat shocked at the news.
“How can we help?” Elise asked, and I smiled at my sister.
Elise had come so far from the scared little girl Devlin and I rescued all those years ago, but under it all, the memories of her painful and traumatic childhood still haunted her as well.
“She wants her revenge on Tucker and I told her she could have it,” I replied, and Amaya nodded.
“I hope she makes him suffer,” she added, and I kissed her on the side of the head.
Devlin’s phone chimed and he walked to the elevator and entered a code to allow the doors to open on this floor. Turning to me, he spoke with a deadly tone. “We need to get changed.”
I stood, and Amaya kept her hand in mine for a moment. I looked at her and she smiled before I followed Devlin into the spare bedroom on the far side of the apartment. Locking the door behind us, we quickly changed into our black and gray hunting clothes, strapping knives and guns to ourselves. He grabbed an extra Glock 9mm and we walked into the living room to find Hayden and Aubrey waiting for us, with Amaya and Elise fussing over Aubrey.
My sister looked up at me with a tilt to her head and I saw she was wearing black pants and a fitted black shirt. She looked like she was ready to kill, and I handed Hayden a gun before saying goodbye to Amaya and Elise. Walking into the elevator, the three of us surrounded Aubrey, shielding her in our protection as we headed to the warehouse.
