I smiled warmly at her for the offer, but I didn’t know when I wanted to meet Chuck and Blaire officially. They had been amazing guardians and confidants to Elise, but their time as her protectors was over. If I went today, my anger at the unknown man would bleed out, and I wouldn’t do anything to damage her relationship with them.

“I can’t today, baby. Soon though, I promise.” I kissed her softly as I heard a knock on the front door.

I stood and carried her into the apartment, sitting her in a chair at the table before I opened the door. James was standing on the other side with our food.He mouthed to me, ‘I’ll meet you upstairs at noon.’ Taking the bag from him, he turned and got on the elevator, the number panel showing he was going down.

I was still in the dark about what he found out, but I wouldn’t jeopardize my time with Elise for vengeance again. I left last night, and she was put into a situation that she never deserved. I fought the anger inside as we dug into our delicious food. All too soon, she was putting on makeup and fixing her hair to go to her parents’ house.

I kissed her deeply before she got on the elevator, shoving my tongue into her mouth and fucking her lips like I planned to fuck her pussy tonight. Now that I had my first taste of her after all these years, I was addicted. She entered the elevator, her hand covering her swollen lips. Just as the door closed, I told her, “I love you.”

Taking the stairs, I entered my apartment and pulled up the security camera from her living room. Dialing the recording back, I found where I entered her apartment and watched it over and over, looking for something I missed. The only thing I saw was worry in my lamb’s eyes. Worry that I would eliminate as soon as James gave me a name.

Chapter 9

Devlin

Iwaited for Jamesto return, listening to her words, seeing the pain on her face. I had no enemies. Not anymore. Anyone who crossed me either begged for forgiveness at the end of my blade or fell to their death at my feet. I scrubbed my hand down my face, the dark feelings wrapping its hands around my heart. The need to kill, to watch the soul leave a person’s eyes as I sent them to their maker, was a driving factor for too many years.

Pushing the demons deeper, I paced the apartment and thought of my lamb. Her presence in my life had been the only thing that had ever kept the wolves at bay. The years she was away from me, living the life she deserved, tortured my soul. I wanted her to be happy, to experience life the way a person should and not the fucked-up world I had been cast into.

James walked in and hung his coat on the hook. Grabbing a couple of waters from the fridge, he settled on the couch and silently watched me as I stalked back and forth. Elise’s worried face was paused on the big screen hanging from the wall.

I turned to him and pointed at the monitor, roaring into the apartment. “Who the fuck do I need to kill for putting that look on her face?”

James held his hands up, trying to calm me down as I swept the paperwork on the table to the floor, pages raining down. “Calm down, Devlin. You’re going to have to rein in your temper.”

I spun and gripped his throat tightly, pushing him against the couch. Holding him firmly, I spoke with deadly venom. “Who. Is. He?”

“It’s Cameron, man,” he spoke around my hand and I released him quickly.

James rubbed his throat and coughed a few times before he continued. “Skid spent last night in the park, trying to find out who he was. Right after you went to Elise’s this morning, he sent me a picture and a location. I just got back and it’s him. Chuck’s brother is the one who scared the shit out of Elise.”

“What the hell is his problem? I never had a run-in with him and as far as I remember, he was never into debt with Marco. Why confront Elise and why after all this time? What does he hope to gain?”

“I found him living in an old warehouse by the boat storage facilities. He came to the park to get breakfast from the church people and that’s when Skid tracked him back. When I got to the warehouse. Shit,” he exclaimed and ran his hands through his hair.

“What?”
