“You’re right, that was a much better claiming night than the first,” she yawns, stretching her arms over her head.
“Tired? Dru, Darlin’, I’m nowhere near done with you. Eat so you can have some energy.” I hand her the bowl of fresh strawberries I cut up.
“Don’t mind if I do,” she says, popping a strawberry into her mouth.
Thunderous hooves capture our attention, and that’s when I see Romeo and Juliette running through the field. The moonlight catches their eyes, and that’s when I see it.
Juliette’s eyes are red just like Romeo’s.
“I’m happy he found his Beloved.”
“Me too. He needed someone other than me.” Just like I needed Dru.
“Skew-dang!”
I groan when I hear Lorcan. How does he always find the worst moments to interrupt?
I glance around, not spotting him until Dru points to the left. That’s when I see him running through the field with the spine lasso I made out of Dru’s enemies.
“Can I have this?” he shouts from across the field, practicing lassoing a wooden post.
Dru munches on a strawberry to stop herself from laughing.
“No! It’s Dru’s. You can’t have it,” I shout, covering most of Dru’s body with my own so Lorcan can’t see what belongs to me.
“Can I borrow it?” he yells again. “Please? I want to go to Purgatory with it.”
“Just let him take it. I’m not using it.”
“You give him an inch and he will take a mile,” I warn.
“That’s fine. He’s a good friend. I trust him. As should you.”
Well, her honesty has me feeling a little guilty.
“Fine. Take it. Go now and stop interrupting our date night!” I cup my hands by my mouth to make my voice louder.
“Oh, the other Voids aren’t going to believe this.” With a wave, he vanishes, finally leaving us alone.
After a few snacks, we lie down again, covering ourselves with a couple of blankets as we stare up at the stars.
“You know, you never told me where you got your name,” she says. “Kentucky is very unique.”
“I was named after the Kentucky Coffeetree you see in the front yard. I was born under it.”
“I’ll need to make sure nothing happens to that tree.”
I grin, kissing her temple.
“Look! A shooting star. Let’s make a wish. Wow, I’ve never seen one before. It’s gorgeous.”
I love to hear the excitement in her voice. I watch her follow the shooting star illuminating the sky, wanting to get every glimpse she can of it.
“My only wish to spend every Kentucky night with you for all eternity, Darlin’.”
The end.
