I picked up Melanie and snapped everything away. She clutched my neck muttering, “You smell so good. I don’t want you to ever go away.” I replied, “I won’t.” She was asleep but still talking. She whispered, “Everyone leaves me.”

I froze before vowing, “I will never leave you, Lovebug. You’re mine and I’m yours. That’s forever.” She said, “I want that to be true.” I declared, “It is.” She didn’t answer but my fury knew no bounds. What did that mean?

Everyone leaves her? What the HELL was going on? There was no way the McAlister’s just threw her into whatever this is. Is there? I couldn’t be allies with them if they did. EJ would be in a tough spot, but I would not have that.

The thing was, I knew Jason wouldn’t do that. I knew for a fact he was so proud of Melanie’s dancing abilities. Why would they have a link to watch her dance if they knew she wasn’t there? That solidified it for me, the McAlister’s were in the dark too.

Did the Supernatural Council actually lie about the McAlister’s death themselves to Melanie? Was she such a bad liar they convinced her they were gone? Oden growled, “That would make more sense than all the natural disasters that struck before she could come home.”

I added, “Or all the lame excuses for her not to come home. Why didn’t we find it odd someone who is a genius gave such weak excuses?” He admitted, “I don’t know. Sometimes we did though, and then we’d think we were overreacting.” He was right, we did.

What I did know about all this was that Drake would be through the roof pissed off. All of the McAlister’s would be. Peter, Dalton, and Dakota would be right there with him. This happened when Peter was the Alpha, but Melanie was still Dalton and Dakota’s pack member.

The longer I thought about it, the more it confirmed she had to think something bad about us, her home pack, and the rest of our allies, to not come home or any of us. It HAD to be specific to her because the Resistance was sending us people that needed help.

If I was right, she was doing all this alone without someone running her that was trustworthy. Which meant they would have to die. Oden linked, “You were already pretty certain our sniper was her. Well, as Ashley.”

I questioned, “What’s her problem with Jase then? She literally has to believe T is dead because she keeps saying Jason the Beta.” Oden sighed, “It makes sense and it doesn’t. The sniper has been around though. She’d have seen T.”

I agreed, “Yes and no. T has never been targeted. Ever. He’s never even been sent out.” Which I now found convenient and highly suspect. Oden growled, “This is crazy. Why would anyone do that to her?” I admitted, “I do not know, but I’ll find out. Because it’s beyond cruel to tell anyone their family is dead when they are not.” Oden was furious so I changed the subject.

I said, “About your earlier comments about our mate being special. What do you know? I promise to believe you no matter what you say.” Oden snorted, “Of course you’d believe me. I’ve been right for the last several years.”

I sighed, “Yes, yes, yes. You were right. What’s going on with her? Will she shift? Is she going to be ok if she can’t? Will Freya?” Oden gloated, “She’ll shift. She just needs to be strong enough. Mate is…” I interrupted, “Special. I know. WHY do you keep saying that though? You seem to have a different reason than me. Or more of one.”

Oden replied, “I can’t tell you. You’ll have to find out when the time is right.” I was annoyed with that answer. I questioned, “Special like I need to up to training for the Warriors? Special like she’s a fighting machine like me? Special like she’s our whole world?” Oden answered, “All of those are accurate.”

I growled, “Oden, I’m a Fairy. Evasions are my bread and butter. If there is a threat to our mate, I need to know about it. You know that!” Oden urged, “Just prepare for a lot. Mate IS very special. She is special to us, but in general.”

I asked, “Do you know what she’s been through? Do you know who is behind this?” Oden snorted, “I’d tell you that if I did. Freya told me she’s weak because she’s been hurting all this time locked away inside Melanie. She didn’t know what was going on the whole time she was locked away, but it hurt her everyday. It’s part of why she’s so weak. She broke through a few times, briefly, when mate was in danger.”

I asked, “Does she know about the guy who supposedly tried to mark her? Is that what actually happened even though Melanie doesn’t remember? It’s what everyone thinks happened. No one believes that accident bullshit.”

Oden growled, “That piece of waste wolf's name is Apex. Freya contacted him briefly and he told her his name. He wants her. He respected Freya, but he wanted her.” I growled, “He can’t have her!” Oden snarled, “Freya wasn’t going to let him have her.”

I pressed, “So Freya remembers that accident and what happened?” Oden told me, “Sort of. Melanie does not remember, but Freya said there’s something weird about it. What Freya could tell me was there was a fight. She briefly got Melanie’s memories the day when she broke through. Melanie fought some guy in the pack and then fought a different guy. She was hurt badly in the second fight.”

I asked, “How? We saw her take down someone with Alpha blood today. How could someone have hurt her in a fight?” Oden sighed, “That’s unclear. She was hurt though, and Apex’s human attacked her in the ring. He bit her in multiple places before Melanie won the fight, but not her neck.” He was dead.

Oden continued, “Melanie was off kilter from her injuries and Freya surfacing for a moment. After the fight, her friends were driving her somewhere. That’s when the car accident happened. He chased after mate. She threw her friends out of the car. That’s how they weren’t seriously hurt.” Unfuckingbelievable.

“Freya guided Melanie through a holoport her Witch friend had created when she was thrown from the car. Then she lost consciousness again. That’s all Freya knows.” I snorted, “That’s a HELL of a lot considering Melanie doesn’t remember much of anything.” Which seemed magical since her suppressed wolf knew.

Oden told me, “You need to convince her to report the whole thing. Freya told me that Melanie filled out all the paperwork about Apex after you asked her to.” I was confused because I’d never heard that. I said, “Dad didn’t tell me that.” Oden explained, “She didn’t submit the papers to anyone. She filled them out though, because of us.”

I considered that then admitted, “EJ said she had a crush on me. That’s probably why me saying to file got her to at least fill it out.” Oden disagreed, “No, it wasn’t a crush. She knew you were her mate. She always has.” I reminded him, “That’s not possible.” Oden smugly said, “Oh, but it is.”

His confidence confused me. I asked, “How? She’s a full blooded Werewolf and they don’t know their mates until they turn eighteen. Unless Emmaline or Aria tells them.” Oden snickered, “You’ll see.” I huffed, “Cryptic damn wolf.”

Oden told me, “You might actually fall over.” I groaned, “Why won’t you just tell me?” Oden admitted, “I can’t.” I asked, “How long have you known?” Oden answered, “I’ve known from the moment I heard her name.”

I scoffed, “Melanie’s name? That’s a long time to keep a secret from me.” Oden corrected me, “No, since I heard her wolf's name.” I rubbed my temples. I said, “You're a new wolf and I’m your first human. How could you know another wolf you hadn’t met before?”

Oden explained, “All wolves know their history, new or not.” I frowned, “I know Werewolf history too. Or are you referring to Norse Mythology?” Oden laughed, “I’m not talking about Norse Mythology. Wolves have been waiting a long time for Freya to pick/get a human.” What in the what was happening?

I racked my brain for answers but didn’t have any. Eventually I linked Phil, “Hey, are you up?” Phil replied, “You are so lucky my mate just fell asleep.” I retorted, “You’ve cockblocked me and my mate multiple times now. Ask your wolf if he knows Freya.”

Phil asked, “Uhh ok. Why?” I clarified, “Oden says wolves have been waiting a long time for her.” Phil snorted, “Weird. Hold please and I will ask Rocket.” After several moments Phil answered, “Ok, we are embracing the weirdness. He does know Freya, BUT he’s never met her until now. What is happening?”
