Avery yelled, “Yeah you jerks, why don’t you try to take us all.” Paige laughed, “Yeah, bring it!” They all turned to them. I screamed, “NO! LEAVE THEM ALONE! DON’T YOU GO NEAR THEM!” I couldn’t watch anyone else I loved die.
I heard wolves snarling in the distance, but I knew they wouldn’t be able to see us. Did Beta Patrick from Blair’s pack come back? I let Freya come back. I told her, “I need whatever strength you’ve got.” Freya gave it to me.
I kicked my feet up using my core muscles to get off the hook. I snapped the neck of the guy who had been shocking me…mostly because he was looking at Avery. Warriors appeared and were fighting my friends. Dax and Caine showed up along with Hendrick and Mason.
I screamed, “AVERY LOOK OUT!” She was being flanked. Buck flew into the fray to protect Avery. I was kind of surprised he’d come out here, but maybe he’d been following her. I paused for a beat, then a roar of anger hit the air that made my heart stopped. I knew who that was.
Caine linked, “Who the hell was that?” I answered, “It’s Xander.” I turned and saw him just outside of the magical barrier. It wasn’t just him though. It was Black Mountain and their allies. I saw Ajax and Oden; however, they couldn't see us…Right?
I heard a cynical laugh behind me and turned back around. Edward had set the newborn pup down and was now pointing a gun at Ajax. I screamed, “AJAX, NO!” I wasn’t watching my only living brother die. I was NOT going through that again. I ran at Edward and reached him right before he fired. I grabbed his arm making him fire into the air.
We fell to the ground in a heap. I vowed, “You’re not killing my only living brother, you bastard!” Edward laughed maniacally then headbutted me in the face. I felt, and heard, my nose broke. I didn’t care though.
We grappled for the gun. He pushed me away and pointed it again. I pushed it to the side and grabbed the slide, pushing it back so the bullet in the chamber popped out before I hit the release for the magazine. He snarled and kicked me away from him again. It was getting hard to breathe. Freya was losing strength. I’d been shocked too many times.
I looked up while Edward laughed at me. He held the pup out to drop him into the hole. Seriously? He was going to drop a pup in the hole?! That would kill the pup. I gathered all my strength and stood up. I screamed, “NO!” I heard several other screams while I ran as fast as I could.
Edward smirked at me then dropped the pup. I dove over the hole, caught the pup, and barely grabbed the edge. Edward was running away, but an Alpha wolf had him already. I didn’t know who it was, but he’d defeated him.
Sadly, it didn’t look like that Alpha was going to kill him just yet. A pity really since Edward needed to go. He did have a lot of answers though I guess. I got my elbow up and pushed the up onto the ground as far away from the hole as I could. I whispered, “You’ll be ok little guy.”
As soon as he was safe, I was hit by a bat on the hand. I felt the bones in my hand break and screamed.
One of Buck’s Warriors…that Buck hated along with me… was trying to make me fall into the hole. I heard a snarl.
Several actually, but one distracted me because I’d heard it many times before everything changed. I looked over towards the sound and got hit in the head so hard I was seeing stars. I couldn’t hang on. I whispered, “I’m sorry, Xander. I’m going to pass out.”
I heard a howl of agony and rage and knew it was Oden. I just couldn’t hang onto consciousness any longer. I heard people screaming, “LADYBUG!” I heard my mom scream, “MY BABY! SOMEONE HELP MY LITTLE GIRL!”
As I fell, I looked towards their voices. I couldn’t help but smile. At least it was a good hallucination. Getting hit hard on the head had its perks. My mom was there, and I spotted Tristan too. My dad was running towards me with everything he had in him. Tears filled my eyes. Maybe it was my time to join them. They faded from my view.
I heard my dad shout, “MELANIE JANE, YOU HANG ON BABY! DADDY IS COMING!” I smiled even though all I could see was darkness. I felt arms wrap around me that I knew as well as the scent that came with them. My dad. This was nice. I whispered, “I miss you, daddy.”
As I was fading from consciousness, I swore I felt another pair of arms much smaller wrap around us. Suddenly I felt a breeze on my face, but that wasn't possible in the hole. Nothing was. It was just dark, cold, and small.
Freya whispered, “We will be ok.” I hoped she was right. I wanted to talk to Xander at least one more time. I wanted to smell his scent and stay in his arms. A warm light surrounded me. It felt amazing. I couldn’t help but give into the feeling and float into the abyss of the light.
What Is Happening?
Xander couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow when he saw Melanie’s hair through the windshield of the car that came speeding around the corner. Sierra was behind the wheel of a sports car. Did they steal it? I subtly took a picture of the license plate.
I planned to have Micah run it down. Then I could get it back to the owner before the police got involved looking for it. Or I’d figure out how the HELL they got this car. I knew for a fact Alpha Edward didn’t have one like this.
The garage to the place went up and I followed them inside. To say I was astonished would be an understatement. The inside of the place was nice. There were three other cars in this garage. There was a keypad to get into the door. Holy fuck balls.
Was I inside the garage of a Resistance building? Is that how they got that car? Was the Resistance recruiting people from packs with less money and offering access to cars and places like this? Given the state of their pack, it’s no wonder Sierra and her friends would jump at this. I was ready to tear the Supernatural Council apart if this was their doing.
I took pictures behind my back. Oden snorted, “Our Beta’s mate acted like we didn’t know it was intentional it didn’t look amazing on the outside.” She seemed nervous and running off adrenaline. I popped them back to their hotel room.
I inhaled deeply hoping to calm down from Melanie’s scent, but she smelled like nothing. Oden chimed back in, “That is a flashing neon sign. We can never track the Resistance because they have no scent. We know Melanie should smell like us and herself.” He was right.
Oden snorted, “Hallelujah. My human half has seen the light. I think I’ll throw a party.” I rolled my eyes, “Jeez, a guy doesn’t listen to his wolf about one thing; One thing you had reasons to be fickle about, and he holds it over your head forever.”
Oden sighed, “I know why you doubted I was right about her. I do get that, but I wasn’t wrong though.” I replied, “And I’m abundantly overjoyed and glad that you were not.” Sierra’s phone rang and Melanie pushed me into the bathroom and shut the door. She quickly took her pants off.
I ran my eyes up her legs. She grabbed a robe and pulled it tightly around her, then put her hair in a towel. I raised my eyebrows. Sierra yelled and I nearly fell over because her friend called her Mel not Ashley. Melanie didn’t seem to realize what I’d just heard.
I couldn’t help but smile because I couldn’t wait for her name to cross my lips. She ripped the Beta of Black Path apart for wanting to talk to her. I nearly growled when she asked if he hid in his office if they got attacked.
