I disagreed, “There is often always someone that needs to be killed. If Uncle Bjourn doesn’t have one Heath Scott does.” Uncle Bjourn snorted and tossed a file down for Spencer. He snatched it up saying, “This is really best for everyone. You can’t key up a Hackura to kill and not have him kill. That’s literally madness.”
Aunt Torvi knocked, “Bjourn, you…” She trailed off and clapped, “I knew I felt you in here, Spence! I thought I was crazy you’re not supposed to be here until tonight.” Spencer hugged her, “Hi momma. I’ll see you later.” She shouted, “Take Oligar with you. He just got back too.” He waved, “Sure thing.”
Aunt Torvi asked, “Am I interrupting?” I admitted, “Not really. There’s nothing to debrief. I was in a field for three days without my target then because of random Goblins I found out the Resistance was out there.” I paused then Oden growled.
I asked, “How are they doing that?! I didn’t smell or sense their presence! I should’ve heard a steady, consistent heartbeat.” Uncle Bjourn replied, “They have ways to block it out.” Aunt Torvi said, “Which will be very cool when we finally pin one down. Drake and Heather want to lock them in a lab with them and see what they will show them.”
I rolled my eyes. Oden growled, “I don’t like that. We can’t let them lock our sniper up.” Yeah, we didn’t like that our sniperwasn’t technically ours. I had a different one. Oden retorted, “She’s OUR sniper and that’s the end of that story.” Maverick popped in agitated.
I asked, “Mav?” He sighed, “I just feel keyed up. I was walking around town. This random Frost Giant was there but when I walked by he died of a heart attack. I was keyed up before that.” Uncle Bjourn asked, “A random heart attack?” He nodded.
I asked, “Isn’t that like the fourth person to randomly die of a heart attack near you? Because I’m thinking the Resistance might be more subtle than gunshots sometimes. They’ve upgraded to poison.”
Maverick’s jaw dropped.
He asked, “Are you serious?” I replied, “You feel me. I am very serious.” Uncle Bjourn agreed, “That’s a big coincidence.” He called Uncle Gunner, “We need you in my office.” He showed up in seconds.
We explained my theory and he pulled cameras from the area. Maverick said, “No one touched his drink.” I pointed, “Right there. On the chair. Son of a bitch.” I opened a portal to where Maverick had been. I walked around the corner where they were already doing CPR on the Frost Giant.
Not that the humans would know what she was. She looked like a normal person right now. She could transform into her giant though. I conjured a hood and kept my head down and swiped her purse then got into an alley. I portaled back to Uncle Bjourn’s office.
I dumped the purse. Uncle Gunner said, “There was a smaller framed person that sat in that chair two hours prior. It’s subtle but watching the chair you can see them subtly place something there.” Uncle Bjourn said, “We are having someone get the chair.”
I snarled and yanked my parents to me. Mom popped them in half dressed. I threw pictures of Maverick over to my uncle’sdesk. Dad snarled, “What the fuck is this?” I replied, “They were going to kidnap him.” I held up written instructions.
Uncle Bjourn answered his phone, “Evin, what did you find?” Uncle Evin said, “There’s nothing on the chair to suggest anything was here. No adhesion, nothing left behind, not a single fucking clue. I sent Brody to the hospital to bring the body to our realm. I’m going to see if I can collect the others from the locations Gunner sent. It might’ve been too long though.”
Uncle Bjourn snorted, “If they are gone get who took the bodies.” Uncle Evin agreed, “On that. Gunner, put something in there that I’m family.” He agreed, “Doing that.” Uncle Evin hung up. Mom asked, “What the fuck is going on?”
I said, “Maverick saw another person die from a heart attack near him and I found it odd.” Uncle Bjourn offered, “Poison is often a woman’s game.” Dad snorted, “How do you boys keep getting women obsessed with you?”
“They are also helpful. None of the women obsessed with me have ever even ONCE thought about being helpful. Yours kill people that are threats to you.” Mom agreed, “He’s right. The ones obsessed with him are the fucking worst even if they have damn good taste.” She popped and wrapped her arms around my dad’s neck and kissed him.
When she pulled back she said, “How our sons get women obsessed with them is an easy answer. Have you seen them? They look JUST like you. You’re all handsome. Honestly, this type of obsession is preferable.” We all turned to look at her. She warned, “Don’t give me that damn look. I far prefer the women who goes to every length to protect you than the psychotic fucking crazy one.”
Uncle Gunner turned his computer around. There was split screen of the places where Maverick had seen those dying of heart attacks. We raised an eyebrow at the same person there placing something on a chair.
Mom ordered, “Play it forward.” Other people sat in the chair but thirty minutes before Maverick showed up the people who sat down in that seat were the ones who died. I asked, “How the fuck did they target those people directly and not get every single damn person who sat in that chair?”
Dad answered, “They are really smart. Scarily so even. It’s going to be some type of device.” I asked, “Who the hell are these people?” Oden snorted, “Mate could go undercover with them.” That was true. She was smart enough they’d want her in.
Mom asked, “What was that feeling son?” Everyone raised an eyebrow at me. I carefully said, “We know someone smart enough that could go in undercover trying to get into that group. They’d drool over the prospect a genius like her.” Oden perked up, “And we could meet her then. It would be our mission.” That was true.
Dad said, “They’d never agree.” I shrugged, “Ask.” Mom questioned, “Are we talking about the prank? Because I did suggest her involvement on creating Laxenread and you all acted like I was fucking crazy.” Dad said, “She’s living her dream.” Mom groaned but dropped it.
I thought through everything while my dad worked on talking to Red Run. Uncle Bjourn asked, “What are you thinking?” I replied, “Maverick has had a sniper previously. This change was four months ago. Did someone new join the Resistance? Does he have a new person assigned to his threats? The only reason they would change their MO would be a different person is handling it.”
Uncle Bjourn nodded, “I agree. It does sound like he got someone permanent. It must be someone our sniper trusts because you are the only person that appears to have a permanent person on you. Our sniper covers everyone else they can, otherwise it’s sporadic on the coverage.”
Mom agreed, “Someone probably proved they had a knack for figuring our threats against Mav. What do we have on these assholes that died?” Uncle Gunner admitted, “We were watching them. Whoever is on Maverick doesn’t like anyone watching him. Today was not going to be the kidnapping attempt. They were observing him to see if he had a pattern.”
Mom shrugged, “Like I said, I’ll take this type of obsession over the crazy ass women. They are protecting my sons from harm with superior technology has me ready to conjure them the world. Maybe she’ll end up being mated to Maverick then we could meet them.”
Maverick snorted, “Nothing in the area smelled good.” Oden commented, “They don’t have a scent and he did feel weird.” That was true but I wasn’t going to get his hopes up in case it was wrong. Mom said, “Well, that’s the type of woman or man I’d hope for my kids to find. Someone willing to go to any length to protect them.” Dad agreed, “It is really helpful.”
Caesar came in with files on the people who had died. Uncle Bjourn agreed, “We were aware of them, and they had plans to make moves, but this one just made a derogative comment about wishing Maverick dead.” You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Mom snorted, “I love these people so much. Where are we at on the theory someone with Hackura blood is involved?” My head jolted over to hers, but I had to admit it made a lot of sense. Uncle Bjourn replied, “We cannot find anyone involved. Dad had a lead he went to handle personally.”
