“I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around. Not that I’m complaining.” She looks up at him, and something passes between them. I thought I was doing good and didn’t need anything more than Max and the occasional hookup but seeingthe two of them together makes me realize just how much is missing from my life.
I hand him his card back, and after we say our goodbyes, I walk to the back room and pull out my phone. I’ve never texted her when she’s at work, but the need to reach out to her has me typing out a text anyway.
Travis
I just got done with Maverick and Bella’s tattoos. I think you’re going to love them.
I expected to have to wait for a response, but I smile when the three dots appear.
Sophia
I can’t wait to see them. I know I’m going to love them. You’re extremely talented.
My heart thumps against my chest as pride fills me from her compliment.
Travis
Thank you.
I hesitate before I type out another text. The worry and uncertainty that have been nagging me this week are not something I’m used to. I need answers and to know what she is thinking before I go mad with my thoughts.
Travis
I’ve missed you this week. One might think you’re avoiding me…
Sophia
You saw me on Monday and Wednesday. How is that avoiding you?
Travis
You know what I mean.
Sophia
You’re going to have to spell it out for me.
I let out a long sigh. She’s not going to let me off easy. She knows I’m holding back still and wants more from me.
Travis
Are you with your students now?
The last thing I want to do is send something that she shouldn’t read in front of a classroom of five-year-olds, including my son.
Sophia
No, they’re at recess. I’m at my desk grading papers. Why?
Travis
Because what I want to say probably shouldn’t be read in front of a bunch of kids.
Sophia
That’s so cute that you thought of me and the kids.
Cute? Fuck. Now she thinks I’m cute. I ignore the cute part and get back to what Ireally want to say.
