The suggestion seemed like it came from nowhere, but after that day, nothing surprised me anymore.

Taking a deep breath, I hoped I had understood her correctly. “I could come over to yours.”

“I’d like that.” A beat. “We can finish our conversation from earlier.”

“Send me your address. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” I ended the call first, waiting expectantly for my directions.

Ten seconds later, her address arrived, and I tapped the details into my maps app to help me find it. It wasn’t too far away from where we’d met for coffee. I hesitated before leaving, wondering whether it would be bad form to turn up with an overnight bag. I didn’t want to seem too presumptuous. Deciding against it, I headed out into the evening.

Lex’s apartment building blew me away. Situated in a posh part of South West London that wasn’t familiar to me, the large, terraced house appeared to be split into several flats. Several Porsches and top-of-the-range four-by-fours lined the street, and I clocked an Aston Martin just two doors down from hers. The fact I still lived in a flat share with my mates wasn’t lost on me. While I’d always been jealous of Lex’s career, I couldn’t deny it had afforded her luxury that was currently well out of my reach.

I pressed the security buzzer and waited.

“Hello?”

“Lex, it’s me, Jordan.”

“Come on up. I’m on the second floor.”

The main door buzzed. I pushed the heavy wood to enter and headed up the stairs. There were two doors at the top, and Lex stood framed in the one on the left. She’d changed since I’d seen her earlier, now clad in skin-tight yoga pants that emphasised her shapely legs and a hoodie that hid her glorious tits.

I waved a hand around. “This is… fancy.”

She gave me a shy smile. “Inheritance and hard work, plus a buyer desperate to sell helped.” Standing aside, she ushered me in.

The inside was just as impressive as the outside. Decorated in calming, neutral tones, the open plan kitchen-slash-living area was to the right of the tiny entrance area, a bathroom to the left, and a closed door in front of me alluded to a bedroom. It suited Lex perfectly.

“Can I get you a drink?” she offered.

“Nah, I’m good, thanks.”

“Sure?” She hovered in the space between the living room and the kitchen.

I wanted a clear head to finish the conversation we’d started earlier. Any kind of alcohol, mixed with the beers I’d had earlier, would cloud my judgement.Shit, I’m getting sensible.“Don’t let me stop you, though.”

As she turned towards the fridge, I was sure I saw a sigh of relief shudder through her. Whatever she wanted to say clearly had her nervous. When she came back with a small glass of wine in one hand, she pointed towards the sofa, and we both sat down, taking a seat at opposite ends.

She took a sip, her ocean-coloured eyes fixed on me before she set the glass down on the low table beside her. “I’m sorry about earlier,” she began. “I wasn’t expecting Theo to turn up when he did.”

“Did you sort things out with him?”

“To an extent. There are a few things we need to firm up, but I’ve got some time off. I think he was scared he was going to lose me.”

I know how that goes.

“So he should be. He ought to know how valuable you are.” I itched to reach over and grab her hand but kept my distance. I didn’t want to rush anything. “What are you going to do with your time off?”

Lex considered my question, then winked at me. “Probably laundry.”

I shook my head. “You need way more excitement in your life than dirty washing. In fact, I have something you should do.”

“And what’s that?”

“Remember my master plan?”

She nodded.

“It’s Levi and Jude’s birthday soon. We’re planning a party to celebrate and also to debut some of the new stuff we’ve been recording. Like a mini album launch.” Dropping my head so I didn’t have to look at her, I went on. “I’d really like it if you could come.”
