Cami started shaping my nails with a file. “Yeah, nirvana something?”

“Interior Nirvana. They aren’t making any more shows. So I can’t apply to be a contestant.”

Her hand stopped in mid-air. “Seriously? You had your heart set on that.”

“Exactly.”

“What are you going to do now?”

Even though it was almost the same question as Mom had asked earlier, it seemed easier to talk to Cami.

“Honestly, sis, I don’t know. I thought something would have come from that meeting I had with Austen about staging. But I haven’t heard from him, so I assume it’s not good news.”

“You don’t know that for sure though, do you?” She buffed the nail with some kind of hard sponge, then rubbed some oil over the cuticle. “Also, your nails are in really bad shape. Who on earth used to do them for you in New York?”

“Thanks, kick a girl when she’s down, why don’t you?” I snickered. If bad nails were the worst that it got, then I couldn’t complain.

“I’m serious though. Call Austen. Go to his office. See what’s going on. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

Of course, she hit the nail on the head. She may have been the younger Harlow sister, but sometimes she had all the answers.

“If you’re desperate for a job, Wade needs some help at Dempsey’s.”

It was a throwaway comment, but Wade had mentioned it to me himself too.

Was I desperate?

Would a bar job fill a gap while I worked out my plans for the future after they’d been dealt a sideways blow?

Working with Wade again certainly wouldn’t be a hardship either…

What did I have to lose?

ChapterTwelve

Wade

Every timeI thought about Jaime’s message, a stupid grin spread across my face.

She’d messaged me late last night to say she’d be interested in coming back to work at Dempsey’s, and I couldn’t be happier.

We’d made a good team when we were in college.

And I didn’t think there was any reason why we couldn’t this time around.

Except now she was my ex’s sister.

Not just Jaime, my good friend to hang out with.

I saw her differently.

I felt differently about her.

Fuck.

Keep it professional, Wade. All you have to do is work together, nothing more.

Yeah, right.
