Ems: Not good… X

Almost as soon as I’d sent the message, Georgie was calling me. “Did you speak to Mason yet?”

“No, he’s on a plane, somewhere over the North Atlantic.”

“Any ideas what you’re going to say to him when he does get home?”

“No.”

At Georgie’s end, I could hear some muffled conversation between her and someone else. I thought I heard the words ‘pregnancy emergency’. A few seconds later, she was back. “I’m coming over. You don’t need to be on your own right now. Can I bring you anything?”

I didn’t hesitate. “Bananas.”

She laughed. “Got it. I’ll be there in half an hour.”

True to her word, thirty minutes later there was a knock on the door. In the meantime, I’d had a wash, put on some leggings and a hoodie, and tied my hair up in a ponytail. I was at least presentable, if not the height of fashion.

I opened the front door, to see Georgie weighed down with a shopping bag and a huge shiny helium balloon in the shape of a unicorn. In spite of myself, I let out a yelp of laughter.

“What the actual fuck?”

She shoved her way past me, dragging the unicorn behind her. “I couldn’t exactly get one saying ‘congratulations on your pregnancy’, could I?”

“You could have said it was for Darcy.” I shut the door behind her, still giggling at the giant pastel unicorn floating about our front room. “More importantly, did you get the bananas?”

Georgie placed her bag down on the sofa and handed me the most enormous bunch of bananas I’d ever seen. Ripping one away from the others, I peeled it open and bit off a large chunk. Almost instantly, the nausea I’d been experiencing passed. Funny how something that had used to make me retch, now calmed me instead.

“Thanks for coming over, Georgie. I didn’t really want to be on my own today.”

“Alex was a bit pissed; we were meant to be spending the day together. It’s the only day off we’ve got at the same time this week.”

Guilt pricked at me for tearing my friend away from her boyfriend. “But you told him it was a pregnancy emergency?”

She shrugged. “He thinks I’m spending the day at Itsy Bitsys, helping Darcy out.”

Seriously, I had the bestest friend.

We spent the rest of the morning vegging out on the sofa, watching teen movies in a comfortable silence, me nibbling on a banana and Georgie mainlining coffee.

Georgie made us some soup for lunch, before we resumed our movie marathon. For the most part, the films had been light-hearted and heavy on the eye candy. Then we started watching Mamma Mia, and it wasn’t long before I was in floods of tears—shit, I hated these hormones already.

“It’s not even at the sad part yet,” protested Georgie, pressing pause on the remote.

“What if Mason isn’t on board with this and my child ends up like Sophie, wondering who the hell her dad is?” Unable to control my tears, I wiped my eyes with my sleeve.

Georgie shuffled along the sofa and enveloped me in a hug. “Don’t be silly. You haven’t even told him, so how can you second guess his reaction? And remember, you could always do this on your own.”

I let out something that sounded like a snort through the rivers of snot. “What? Live in the same house as my baby daddy and bring upourchild on my own?”

That’s exactly what my mum would have done. Well, the bringing up a child alone bit anyway. My dad died when I was only a few months old, so I never knew him.

There was only one real answer in this situation. Mum and I hadn’t spoken in a while, but I got a sudden urge to go and see her. Not least to tell her she would be a grandmother, but to get some advice.

Extracting myself from Georgie’s arms, I sniffed loudly, blinking hard. “I think I need to see my mum.”

Georgie nodded. “That sounds like a good idea.”

Wanting to act before I changed my mind, I grabbed my phone and found my mum’s number. Georgie made a strategic exit from the living room, saying something about needing the bathroom. Before I could change my mind, I called Jacqueline.
