Slowly, I shook my head.
He chewed on his bottom lip, as if stalling. “I haven’t had long lasting relationships because it’s easier not to get involved and end up getting hurt. I saw what my mum and dad went through when they divorced, and I swore I’d never end up the same way. Keeping my distance and having fun became what it was all about.”
We’d never had this level of conversation with such honesty. I worried it might be too soon. That anything I said now would lead to nothing, not even the fling I craved to change my relationship path.
“And it’s worked so far?” I asked.
His mouth curved into a small smile. “It seems to have done.” He reached out and traced a line down my cheek. “You wanna have some fun with me?”
I wrestled him back down onto the sofa. “Try and stop me.”

Justin: Woman trouble?
Justin hit the nail on the head. Ever since our conversation the other night, I couldn’t help thinking about what Georgie had told me.She wanted to have fun.Whereas for the first time in my life, I wanted to make things more serious.
Justin: Your latest bird too clingy? Do what you always do, buddy, and get out of there. It’s not a problem.
Curtis: Not sure that’s it, right Alex?
Curtis had the inside track. After I’d asked Amber to help with the surprise party for Georgie, it was all she could talk about. How I’d never done this for anyone before. What made Georgie so special? Why was I going all out for someone I wasn’t even seeing properly? Fuck, we hadn’t even slept together. Although if everything went to plan today, that could change.
Justin: What? You’ve found someone you ACTUALLY like?!
Curtis: He’s even bought her a birthday present…
Justin: He’s never bought me one, lol, must like her.
Alex: Okay, okay. I’ll buy you a beer on your next birthday. Seriously though, I need some advice.
Justin: Fuck, really? And you asked us?
Curtis: Do you want me to ask Amber?
Alex: NO!!! I DO NOT want you to ask Amber. The less she knows the better. Georgie’s different. She’s older…
Curtis: Thirty today.

Alex: Fuck off, Curtis. She’s not long out of an engagement and doesn’t want a full-on relationship.
Justin: So? Right up your street, no commitments, no regrets.
Alex: Thing is… you’re right. I do like her. More than just a couple of dates and shags.
Justin: Well, she is older. She could teach you a trick or two, hahahaha
This wasn’t getting me anywhere. I was trying to be open about my growing feelings, but these two weren’t making it easy. Maybe I should have spoken to Amber.
Alex: I haven’t slept with her yet.
