I smiled back. “Gotta love small town life.” I shook my head, the smile slipping from my face. “I feel like nothing, coming back here all broken and useless.”
“Still feeling sorry for yourself, I see.” Scarlett drew herself up straight. “You listen to me, Jack Cairney, let me tell you something. You’re not broken or useless. And I’d take Wes with a limp any day instead of no Wes at all.”
Her words hit a nerve. What the hell was I thinking? Complaining about a screwed-up ankle when she was dealing with the loss of the love of her life. And she’d have to bring up his child without a father.
I really was a selfish prick.
“Let the people who love you help you, Jack. Let love in. It’s hard to live without your heart.” Then she reached out and hugged me again. “I gotta go. You should drop by the apartment sometime and see Willa too. You know she’s back?”
“Yeah, Andre told me.”
“Remember what I said,” Scarlett whispered as she released me, placing a kiss on my cheek.
I nodded as she stepped into the elevator, the door closing on her. I doubted I’d ever be able to forget.
