“I’m going in.”
“Wait.” She grabbed my arm. “I have one last idea. Let’s go to the grocery store and buy some eggs. Then we can throw them at his windows. He’ll be so distracted he’ll forget that he was about to kill Bennett.”
“That’s your plan? You want to egg his house?”
“They’re a mess to clean up. He’ll come out to stop it.”
“Zoey, we don’t have time to go to the grocery store right now. I’m not waiting another second.” I stood up. “Wish me luck.”
“But he’ll kill you!” She grabbed my arm and pulled me back down behind the bushes. “Look, I’m sorry I didn’t believe you before. But Bennett said he was dangerous and he seemed really serious when he told me. You can’t go in there alone right now.”
“What else am I supposed to do? I can’t just stand here and let something happen to Bennett.”
“What are you two doing?” said a deep voice.
Zoey and I both screamed at the top of our lungs.
Chapter 24
Monday
I spun around and put my hands out, like they would somehow stop an axe from taking my life.
But it was just Bennett standing there. Very much alive.
“Really, what are you guys still doing out here?” he asked and looked down at the bush we’d been hiding behind.
Zoey threw herself into his arms. “We were trying to save you!”
No…Iwas trying to save him. She was trying to tell me we should save ourselves. Or go grocery shopping. And why was she all over Bennett right now?
Zoey pulled back. “How did you get out? God, we’re so glad you’re alive.”
“I can be pretty stealthy when I need to be.” His eyes met mine. “Are you okay, Emma?”
I nodded. I would be as soon as my heart stopped feeling like it was going to beat out of my chest. I tried to take a deep breath, but my lungs weren’t working properly.
He walked up to me, cradling my face in his hands. “You’re sure?”
I nodded. For some reason I wanted to burst into tears. I was just so happy to see his face. “I’m so glad you’re okay. Let’s get out of here.”
“Yeah, I’m starving,” Zoey said. “Let’s go grab something to eat. I know the perfect place.”
That was a good idea. I didn’t want to go back to her house right now. I couldn’t believe she’d invited Theo inside earlier. Such a rookie move.
“Wait,” I said. “What about the voicemail?”
“What voicemail?” Bennett asked.
“We were trying to call Theo to distract him. And we forgot to hang up when it went to voicemail. Zoey said something about him being busy butchering you.”And some other stuff.I glanced at Zoey.
“But we don’t know when the voicemail started,” she said. “It’s possible we only recorded some funny stuff about the size of your dick.”
“Why were you talking about…” Bennett shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. No one listens to voicemails. Especially from an unknown number.”
I stared up at him. He had a good point. I never listened to voicemails. I actually didn’t think I’d even set a voicemail up for my newest phone. “How sure of that are you?”
He shrugged. “Do you guys ever listen to spam voicemails?”
