Titan’s hand landed on my shoulder. His fingers weren’t digging into my skin or anything, but it felt like they would if I tried to move.
Bennett walked into the room. And he had no reaction to Titan’s hand on me.
“We’re in the middle of lunch,” Bennett said. “You’ll have to come back some other time.” But his tone insinuated that he meant, “come back never.”
“Emma, you were late for your first day,” Theo said calmly. “I stopped by Zoey’s house and she let me know where you were. And you forgot your jacket last night at my place.” He lifted up the jean jacket I’d borrowed from Zoey.
Bennett stared at the jacket and back at me.
Oh shit. That made it seem like I’d stripped for Theo during my interview. And hadn’t I kind of?
The smug look on Theo’s face said it all. He was purposely provoking Bennett.
“You said Zoey forced you to go on the interview,” Bennett said. “You’re not seriously taking a job you don’t want?”
Theo stared at me. “No, she wants it. Don’t you, Emma?” He held out my jacket for me.
I didn’t know what was going on here. With Bennett or Titan. Or Otto who had disappeared. But I’d had ten years of dreams where I’d felt safe in Theo’s arms. Even though he was a dick. And I didn’t want to be in this bank anymore. With the domineering tellers and the clanging vaults and all the secrets.
“No, she doesn’t,” Bennett said. “Would you please give me and Emma a moment?”
Theo shook his head. “She’s already late. And we really must be going. Right, Emma?”
I didn’t know what to say.
Titan let go of my shoulder and lumbered toward Theo. “Out. Now.”
“I’m not going anywhere without Emma.”
“You have to the count of three to walk out of here, or you won’t be able to walk ever again.”
What the hell?!I stepped between them. “Stop it.” I put my hand on Titan’s chest when it looked like he had no intention of listening to me. “It’s fine. I’ll go.”
Theo smiled and put out his hand for me.
Pompous ass.I wasn’t going to grab his hand. I walked past him out of the office. But Bennett grabbed my wrist before I could walk out the front doors.
“What are you doing?” he asked. “I told you I didn’t want you alone with him.”
“If I was you, I’d be a little more concerned about me being alone with your supposed friends than with Theo.”
“What do you mean?”
I leaned closer and lowered my voice. “Titan just asked if I wanted him to kiss me.”
Bennett’s eyes searched mine. “And what did you say?”
“Why don’t you seem more upset by this? Isn’t he your friend?” I pulled my wrist out of his grasp. “I don’t know what’s going on with you. But until you can be honest with me about it and whatever it is you’re hiding in those vaults, you can consider this…” I gestured back and forth between us, “…done.” I turned and started walking toward the doors.
“Emma, wait.” He tried to grab my wrist again, but I shook him off and backed up right into Titan.
Titan grabbed my arms.
I thought it was to steady me, but then he didn’t let go.
“You’re not going with him,” Titan said. His voice was low and sinister. Maybe that worked on some women. But not me.
Seriously, what was wrong with these guys? They couldn’t tell me what to do. I pushed Titan off me.
