He just gaped at her.
I couldn’t help but laugh. Honestly, I liked that he was apprehensive like me. “It’s fine. Really. I was hesitant too. I figured you had a micro penis.”
He laughed too. “I mean, it’s small but it’s not micro…”
“What?”
He laughed harder. “I’m joking. It’s like…” he looked over his shoulder at the display of desserts. “Like one of those sharable éclairs.”
“Those look delicious.”
He raised his eyebrow at me.
“I didn’t mean…that wasn’t what I…” my voice trailed off. But maybe it was what I meant. Because for the first time ever, I wasn’t staring at a guy comparing every inch of him to Callum. I was just staring at Bennett. With his charming smile. And his good sense of humor. He wanted to go out with me. He wasn’t running.
A chill ran down my spine and I turned to look out the glass door. And I saw a glimpse of a man in a fitted suit walking away. I didn’t know if it was Callum, but it was almost like he’d just reappeared for a second because he knew I hadn’t been thinking about him. And he wanted to remind me of his presence. I was pretty sure he’d been ruining my life for the past ten years. I needed to quit him. Yet…I was so close to getting to confront him about everything.
I held my camera tight in my hand. I was going to see him again. Even if it was just to slap his perfect face.
Chapter 6
Thursday
Zoey put her elbows on the counter and leaned forward. The cop’s eyes trailed down to her breasts that were practically pouring out of her shirt.
I had full confidence in Zoey’s skills of persuasion when it came to one night stands. But she wasn’t supposed to be seducing this guy. She was supposed to just be getting information from this cop she claimed was one of her clients. So I wasn’t sure why she needed to flirt so much. And I didn’t love the fact that the cop had a wedding band on his finger.
“Of course your next session can be half off, Officer Davis,” Zoey said. She was a personal fitness instructor. And I was starting to wonder if she did something else besides just torturing her clients with squats.
Officer Davis laughed at something else she said.
I started pacing. I just needed answers. I kind of thought that being in the police station would creep me out. But the reception area was completely empty except for me, Zoey, and her married client. The place had the same charm as the rest of the shops on Main Street. It didn’t seem like this was a town that had much crime.
I looked back over at Zoey. She was leaning even closer to the cop.
Maybe I was reading this whole vibe wrong, but this seemed more like a blowjob situation than getting Callum Walsh’s records.
“Emma,” Zoey said. “Come over here.”
Shit, did I have to give him the blowjob?
“She got a clear picture of the license plate,” Zoey said.
Thank God.I showed the cop the screen on my camera. He jotted down the license plate number.
“I’ll be right back,” he said and winked at Zoey.
He disappeared through a door behind the counter.
“Um…what the hell was that?” I asked.
“What was what?”
“The flirting. The winking. Didn’t you see the ring on his finger?”
Zoey laughed and waved her hand through the air. “Getting the best clients in town takes a little flirting sometimes.”
“But he alreadyisa client.”
