And then he leaned forward and slowly traced his tongue along the bite on my lip, licking up the blood.

Fuck.

I came. While he licked me. While the train was only seconds away from seeing us.

He groaned and closed his eyes. And after a few more thrusts inside me, he opened his eyes and they were perfectly golden again.

I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant. Had he had enough blood for one night? Was him releasing himself inside of me just as intoxicating as tasting me?

The train honked again.

Shit.

Callum smiled as he slowly slid out of me. “You love putting yourself in these situations, don’t you?”

I gaped at him.

“I’m only kidding. This one was on me. I…I needed you.”

The lights flickered again and when Callum’s face was relit, his smile was gone.

“I needed you too,” I said.

He lowered his eyebrows. As if he didn’t like my response. And then he turned away from me. He grabbed his shirt off the ground and put it over my shoulders. Luckily it was long enough to cover my ass. Because he’d ripped my leggings. Callum shrugged on his jacket.

The tracks squealed as the train started to brake.

My hair whipped across my face.

Callum reached out and pushed my hair back. He stared down at me as the train came to a stop.

And even though he’d just proved to me that he could control himself. Even though we’d both just said we loved each other. He was staring at me like he was still tortured. Like there was something holding him back.

He ran his thumb along the bite on my lip. And then he looked at the side of my neck. He winced. “Fuck, Emma. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.”

“What?” I grabbed the side of my neck. “Why are you apologizing? I loved every second of that.”

He shook his head and let his fingers fall from my face. He took another step back from me.

What was he doing? I pulled my hand off my neck and looked down at my palm. There was more blood there than there had been from my cut. He’d bit me. But he hadn’t drained my blood or anything. I’d wanted him to do it.

“You got the proof you wanted,” Callum said. “You were right. About all of it.”

Yeah. He’d controlled himself. He wasn’t a monster. “So why are you staring at me like this is goodbye?”

“Because it’s time for you to get on that train, Emma.”

Chapter 36

Tuesday

I looked over at the train and then back at Callum. “Why would you want me to leave after that?”

“Because I’m everything you said I was. I…I’m a monster.” He clenched his jaw, like it pained him to say it.

I closed the distance between us. “You hurt me because I liked it. Because I wanted it.”

He shook his head.
