“Worry about your own line up, Addy,” he clipped in my ear.

“Whatever, you’re the one that has to drive them to the hospital when they break a bone, Brighty.” I flashed him a grin over my shoulder and snuck into line behind Rhea, ready for the ball.

Sunday positioned herself between her and Cosy, her face set into a hard glare as the Hornets clumsily tried to follow suit. I bothered my lip seeing the state of Jensen’s face. The hit he had taken from Cosy resulted in a small but sharp gash that cut through his eyebrow and was bleeding into his eye. He wiped the blood away with the back of his hand, seemingly unbothered as he watched his team with caution as Dean and Van tried to convince Todd that it would be fine, they could hang on to him.

“All you have to do is grab the ball from her in the air when Kaia throws it in to play, then pass it out to Jensen,” Boone explained from a distance.

“Shut up,” Kaia snapped at him, “if they couldn’t be bothered to learn the rules…”

“Are you okay?” I whispered to him, pointing to my own eyebrow as Kaia continued to argue with Boone about his backseat rugby playing.

“What, this?” He patted a finger to the cut with a small hiss and nodded, “Doesn’t even hurt,” he blinked away some more blood as the rain started to fall again. My heart was pounding in my chest at the sight of him, covered in dirt, muscles straining against his jersey, blood dripping down his face. It sounded insane but there was nothing like a damp, dirty and damaged man flushed with adrenaline and madly in love to set me over the edge.

Kaia was still arguing with Boone on the sidelines as Jensen closed the gap and took my chin between his fingers, “really I’m fine,” he whispered, taking my lips against his. I truly wasn’t worried, he was mistaking my absolute infatuation for concern but if I meant that he wanted to try to kiss the worry back from the forefront of my mind, I’d let him.

“Free bird!” Kaia’s voice broke through the adoration and tingling happiness. I knew that play, my brain switching back to rugby just as quickly as it hadturned off. I shoved both hands against Jensen and pushed him back far enough that as I launched toward the ball, tickling from Sunday’s hands, he couldn’t get steady enough to catch me.

I darted down the field, open and free for an easy score. I could hear Jensen behind me, struggling to keep up but he was right on my heels as I slid over the line and tapped the ball down out of breath.

He crumbled over, laying on his back just trying to catch his breath as the rain beat down over the field. “Fuck, you’re fast,” he gasped, closing his eyes as I stood from the ground and hovered over him.

“You tried to distract me.” I tapped my cleat against his muddy ribcage, “cheater.”

“Almost… worked…” he huffed and grabbed my ankle, tugging roughly and causing me to lose my balance. He dumped me into the mud puddle beside him with a smirk on his face.

“I have it in my right mind to jump your bones right here and this is how you treat me?” I teased, rolling over until I was straddling him in the dirt. It didn’t matter who was paying attention, I didn’t care. I just needed contact before I drove myself insane with needy, touch-starved thoughts.

He opened his mouth to say something more when yelling broke out in the air through the rain, Rhea was furious about something and where Rhea was big in bark, Kaia was bigger in bite.

“Fuck,” I swore, slipping in the mud as I tried to get up.

“What did you say?” Kaia snapped, charging across the field in front of me. Rhea was face to face with Todd, drenched in mud and clearly talking shit when he had no right too.

“I asked the terminator if she was packing a cock in those tight little shorts,” Todd made the mistake of repeating himself. Rhea tried to stop Kaia but it was too late, he had signed his death warrant as far as she was concerned.

"More dick then you! You fucking—" Rhea stepped forward but Brighton saved his life and put himself between them completely forgetting about Kaia.

"Wrong Hillcat," I sighed loudly, stopping in my tracks, knowing exactly what was coming.

“Fucking waste of space,” she declared before her hand snapped out and caught Todd across the cheek without remorse.

“Hey!” Bright and Arlo yelled at the same time, everyone staring in shock.

“I mean…” Jensen sighed, his chest coming to my back as I froze.

Boone moved on instinct, throwing Kaia over his shoulder before she could do more damage. She kneed him in the chest but kept his grip on her as she screamed murder and he carried her off the field.

“Get up,” Arlo growled at Todd who had dropped to the dirt so hard his body left an imprint in the softened grass. “Learn some manners,” He shoved Todd by the jersey off the field as Coach called the game.

“Sorry, Hornets…” She shrugged. “I guess we’ll see you all at the next game,” she added with a wink, collecting the balls and getting some of the girls to help. Cosy stood with her brother, talking to Bright with a dirty look on her face as Judd approached.

“That was a wash, I’m going to have to sell my soul to get them to the game.” Jensen chuckled, his head coming to rest on my shoulder.

“Nah, they show up every game…” I confessed and he sighed.

“I think I learned something about myself today,” he whispered, his lips finding my neck. Heat pooled in my stomach as his hands pressed up under my shirt against my stomach.

“What?” I asked, my eyes drifting to Boone absolutely ripping into Kaia as he checked her hand. Hopefully, it wasn’t broken, we couldn’t afford that six-week loss if she needed to heal.
