“My mom’s side is Canadian,” I said to her smoothly, ignoring her accusation because she was half right, it was a ploy to get her in shorts. “My grandmother and Aunt live on the east coast and I spent formative summers of my life growing up sneaking into crowded, backwater bars that only played country music.”
I hooked my finger into the front left pocket of her jeans and spun her out from me, grabbing her wrist at the last second and guiding her back against the railing that partially outlined the dance floor.
“Now listen,” I said to her over the music, “this is going to make you want to sleep with me and I’m going to need you to control yourself.”
“Cocky,” Adeline mouthed but a smile curled on her lips as she leaned back against the barrier.
I stepped back, grinning as I shook out my shoulders. As the music shifted I looked over my shoulder at her and winked, “watch and learn, rookie,” I yelled with a bout of laughter before taking off across the floor and fell into step with the already forming line of bodies.
Adeline watched intently with a soft smile on her face as my feet moved effortlessly in time with the rest of the crowd. My muscles relaxed as my focus slipped the more I lost myself in the music, a smile spreading across my face as the two guys on either side of me joined into the unbridled fun.
Confidence flooded me and the enjoyment of those around me was infectious. I moved fluidly with the music, following my newfound friends in the fun as they added in their own touches on the dance. When we turned back to the other side of the bar, I found Adeline quickly. Her laughter was loud and unbridled with joy as she watched us dancing around like idiots. The music swelled and I kept my eyes on her, my heart on fire beneath my chest. I had never been that happy in my entire life and it was almost terrifying to know that she had something to do with it.
As the music died and was swallowed by the sound of another I shook the hands of the guys around me and wandered back through the crowd toward Adeline.
“Alright, that was impressive,” she smiled at me.
I stepped up to her with a satisfied grin playing across my lips as I tried to catch my breath in a smooth way. I placed my hands on the railing on either side of her, trapping her in, “told you,” I said, leaning in so no one else could hear.
Adeline froze as I closed the gap between us, her smile mirroring mine with a tiny laugh.
“Something funny?” I asked her, our faces inches apart. The heat radiated between us and mingled in the air creating a warm bubble of intimacy right there in the middle of the bar.
“No,” she said. Her eyes flickered up, raking down over me and stopping at my lips. “I hate being wrong,” she whispered.
I raised an eyebrow at her, curious about what she could have possibly been wrong about. “Happens to the best of us,” I said with a smug grin.
“It’s going to be an issue,” she hummed.
“What?” I asked her, still sucked into her gravity and itching to kiss her.
“I think you might be even more attractive than you were before,” she started to laugh, sweet like honey and I wanted to steal the sound from her lips.
I laughed gently at her statement, my eyes never leaving hers. The compliment had dug its way beneath my skin and I felt a warmth spread through me that had nothing to do with the dance or the attention. I leaned in further, our noses practically touching. “Is that so?”
“Next date better not be in public, Jensen,” she warned, challenging my resolve and my ridiculous need to keep the flirtatious game we were playing going.
“I don’t have much say in the matter, it’s your pick, remember?” I smiled at her and watched her hazel eyes get a little bigger, the mischief reflecting back at me like stars.

Ihad woken up to an onslaught of harassing texts and an empty bed. I wasn’t sure what was worse but dropping Adeline off at home after our night out felt like a new form of torture. I had left her another set of dice in her mailbox on the walk back to the car. Small baby blue ones with ducks in them that I thought would put a smile on her face.
I dragged my ass to practice the next day and then to class, and then back for the game tonight. All the while she was radio silent on the phone and I was just hoping that she would show up to the game so I could see her face.
“You took her to Kojo’s without us?” Cael whined, faltering in his stretch and bringing me back to reality. “You haven’t taken any of us there in months!”
The stadium was hot today and half of us were already sweating just from warm-ups. Cael sank into the grass next to Van who was stretching his hamstrings across from me.
