Lillian’s stomach dropped. How had she missed that?

“Looks like we’re not all as nosey as you,” Rose said, jabbing Lucy in the side.

She laughed. “Well sorry, I guess I’m just a busybody.”

Becca grunted, downing the rest of her orange juice. “How about you find a way for me to visit more often, Lucy. I don’t think the captain will let me back on the island after I got tangled up in that rope.”

They burst into laughter and the moment passed. Lillian was grateful to her aunt for changing the subject. She’d deal with Dustin later – if what Lucy had said was even happening.

“Oh wait!” Lucy snapped her fingers. “Rob said we’re supposed to have some chocolate-covered strawberries before we start. I think they’re downstairs…”

Everyone turned to follow, except for Lillian. She wanted a moment to herself.

She turned back to the water and hung her hands over the railing. Despite the events of the day, Lillian felt calm.

It was strange. She’d broken up with Mason, something she’d feared would happen for years. Yet to her surprise, she felt relieved.

On top of that, it was the anniversary of a terrible event. She’d lost her parents thirty years ago today, but she still had so much family around her. So much love.

Long ago, Lillian had found ways to make peace with her past, but this was the first time she was trying to make peace with her future. Though it was frightening, it felt right.

Lillian closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth of the sun on her face. Today was the right day for a new start.
