“Right now. I managed to bug his phone – it was interesting, actually, because I got ahold of this hidden camera he was using, but it was a dead end. And when I was staking out the Starbucks closest to his apartment – ”
“Mike, focus!” Amanda said, getting up to peek out of her window. “Do I need to hide?”
“Oh, right. No, not really. But stay home. I don’t always listen to his calls right away, so I didn’t realize until now. About an hour ago, he called DGG, and he was pretty angry. One of their employees was messing around on his properties. So he’s going to the island to discipline him. Or kill him, I’m not sure. You need to stay away, I’ve been trying to get ahold of your dad but – ”
“Kill him? Are you talking about Will?”
There was silence for a moment. “Ah. He’s your boyfriend, isn’t he?”
Amanda sighed. “No, he’s – ”
Mike cut her off. “Is he the ex-boyfriend?”
Amanda shut her eyes. “No. Neither of those things. Will is myfriendfrom DGG.”
“Right. Well, your relationship status is of no importance to his survival. I’m headed to the island now, but I probably won’t be able to charter a flight quickly enough. I’m regretting that I sold my plane. Do you know where Will is? Can you direct him to safety?”
Panic started building in her mind, but she forced herself to quiet it. She’d be of no use if she were panicking. “I can try. Do you think he’s in danger?”
“Yes.”
Oh man, deep breaths. “Should I call the police? Ah, should I call my dad?”
“Yes to all of those things. And call Will. Let me know when everyone’s aware.”
Mike hung up and Amanda turned to Jade in terror. “Did you hear all of that?”
Jade nodded. “Mostly, though I couldn’t hear everything he was saying. What’s going on?”
Amanda felt dizzy. “Lenny might be trying to kill Will – I need to warn him.”
Jade stared at her, eyes wide. Amanda didn’t have time to waste – she called Will’s phone.
No answer.
Dang it!
She tried again with the same result before sending him a text. “Please pick up, it’s an emergency. You need to get to a safe place. Not your house. And not any of the properties. Maybe the police station? Lenny is coming for you. Call me.”
She hit send and immediately tried calling again. Still no answer.
“Shoot!” Amanda said. “I don’t know where he is.”
Jade bit her lip. “Well, should we at least call the police?”
“Yeah…but what do I tell them? There’s a guy in danger, and I don’t know where he is, and there’s another guy coming to hurt him, but we don’t know where he is either?”
“Good point,” Jade said, frowning. “What about your dad?”
Amanda nodded. “Right. Let me call him.”
She called her dad’s cell phone, also with no answer. “Ugh, nothing.”
She dialed the police non-emergency line and spoke to the operator. “I’m looking for Chief Hank Kowalski. This is his daughter, Amanda.”
“Oh, is everything okay? I’m afraid your dad is busy – we had a capsized passenger boat. There was a collision, and all of the deputies were called in to assist in rescue. One of the boaters fled the scene – I think your dad is tailing him.”
Amanda groaned. Of course today would be the day that her dad decided to be a hero on the marine patrol.
