Plus, Amanda wasn’t exactly a peach. There weren’t a lot of guys out there who were going to put up with her. Rupert understood her, he loved her. At least, he used to love her.
He held her hand when she cried about her mom, he listened to her sob. He was the only one that she could talk to, the only one she could open up to.
He understood her, ugly bits and all. That wasn’t something she was willing to risk just because she was impatient about their status as a couple.
No, Amanda wasn’t going to try to explain that to Jade. It was embarrassing.
When they got back to the car, Amanda was excited to find that she had a new message on her phone.
Her heart fell when she saw that it was from Will. “How’re you doing on this beautiful day? I’ve been running around like crazy all week, but I got the okay to check out some of my new properties. Would you have any interested in seeing them with me and finding people to fix them up? I could really use the help.”
The guilt hit her again. That was the original agreement, wasn’t it? That she would help him navigate the small town politics of the island.
She’d left him hanging there, too.
She and Jade had a pleasant trip back and decided to get a pizza. As they ate, Amanda asked her opinion on seeing Will again.
Jade considered it as she took a bite of pizza. “Hm. Youdokind of owe him.”
“That’s what I was thinking. I can make it clear that we’re just friends.”
“I think you’ve been quite clear with him.”
“Hey!” Amanda laughed and tossed a paper straw across the table. “What’s that supposed to mean? Are you saying that because I haven’t been clear with Rupert?”
Jade laughed. “No, I’m not talking in code. I just mean that you flat out told Will that you were seeing your ex. Right?”
“Right.”
Jade shrugged. “So…I think you’re good there.”
Amanda smiled. It would be nice to see Will again – and it would make her feel less guilty if she could help him in some way.
She answered his message. “I’m happy to help! When are you thinking?”
