Chapter 12
It really seemed like there was a Starbucks on every corner in Seattle. Mike didn’t mind – he quite liked Starbucks. No one questioned him sitting there with a single order of coffee for hours at a time, and the coffee was delicious.
There was a Starbucks across the street from the Dirk Gold Group building. It gave Mike excellent visibility of the main entrance, and of an exit-only stairwell.
There were other ways to get in and out, of course. But the guy he was interested in – Lenny Davies – wasn’t careful about his comings and goings. Ever since Mike arrived in Seattle two weeks ago, he spent many of his days camped outside of the office, waiting for Lenny to show up.
Lenny had only been in twice, but that was enough. Mike was able to follow him – disguised, of course – and place a tracker on his car.
Lenny had never been one of Sabini’s brightest, which made him easy to follow. But it also made Mike wonder what Sabini was entrusting him with. Amanda seemed to think that he was going to sell properties to them, but why?
Maybe it was something minor – something not worth the time of one of Sabini’s main guys? The timing was odd though, and the location. Only a few months after his arrest on San Juan Island, and Lenny was back for more?
There was just something about it that didn’t sit right with him and he couldn’t let it go. That, and the fact that this was the only lead he’d gotten since leaving the FBI.
Though Mike still had friends in the FBI that he could reach out to if needed, he wanted to wait until he had something solid. There was no use kicking up dust and attracting attention to himself before he knew what was going on.
So far, he hadn’t found out much.
When he looked through recent sales on San Juan Island, he didn’t see anything under Lenny. There were some companies that owned buildings, but it was impossible to trace them back to Lenny or to the Sabini family. They could literally belong to anyone.
Mike also found the apartment where Lenny was staying – a fancy high-rise downtown. There was some security and cameras set up in the building, but nothing substantial. After watching it for a day, Mike was confident that he could get into the building. There were a lot of tenants with dogs, so he was thinking that he might need to rent a dog for an afternoon. Was that a thing? It had to be. It would help with his cover and with getting in.
He was still getting used to Lenny’s pattern of movement. Since he didn’t have anyone to be a lookout for him, he had to be extra careful when he broke into Lenny’s apartment to plant the bugs. It was vital that no one was there when he entered or when he was leaving.
According to the information on DGG, there was going to be a party thrown in two weeks’ time for the company’s investors and “friends.” Lenny, the shrewd mastermind that he was, responded on Facebook that he would be attending the party.
Mike couldn’t one hundred percent count on that, but it was the best plan he had for now. He wanted to get something on Lenny’s computer too, if he had enough time. So far, Mike hadn’t been able to crack Lenny’s communications at all. He’d considered using the coffee shop’s WiFi to hack into Lenny’s phone, but Lenny never seemed to be craving a coffee when Mike was snooping around.
That was a let down, but Mike was okay with waiting. Lenny was sloppy. Whatever was going on, Mike would figure it out in the end.
For now, he had to wait for that party.
