Amanda picked up a packet of sweetener, pretending to study it as she listened in.

“And I can’t tell you how excited we are to have you,” the younger guy said. “At DGG, we’ve got the talent of a big group with the personal touch you’d find at a small firm.”

Was this guy a lawyer or something? Lenny probably needed a lot of lawyers…

Amanda pulled out her phone and Googled “DGG Seattle.”

All of the results were for a company called Dirk Gold Group – an investment firm.

A deli employee walked past Amanda and set a cup of coffee down in front of Lenny.

“Thank you Miss,” he said.

In her peripheral vision, Amanda could see that his eyes lingered on the poor woman long after she walked away.

Ew.

Same old Lenny.

He turned back. “You know what Will, that’s what I really like to hear. And I like you. I really do.”

“That’s great, because we like you too!”

Lenny chuckled. “I’m going to grab some milk for my coffee, one second.”

Shoot!

She couldn’t let Lenny see her. Amanda spun, grabbing her coffee and using the sandwich bag to hide her face as she moved toward the door.

“Please, let me get it for you,” the other guy said, quickly standing up.

Amanda, still hiding behind the bag, didn’t see the guy and didn’t slow her panicked escape. Their bodies collided and the flimsy cardboard cup didn’t stand a chance; the cup exploded between them, sending coffee all over Amanda’s already damp shirt and splashing onto the man.

“Wow, I amsosorry – ” he started to say before Amanda cut him off.

“It’s fine, sorry, got to run!” she yelled, pushing the door open and rushing out before anyone else had a chance to see her.
