“What if heisn’t?He probably liked San Juan but is scared to death that Amanda will attack him again.”
Morgan laughed. “He should be scared.”
“Talk to Chief about it if you’re so worried.”
“How about I ask your mom today? Just to see if she wants to…”
Jade shook her head. “Don’t. You know how she is. She’ll tell you something that you’re not supposed to know and then – ”
“Aha! So you agree that there’s something that we don’t know!”
“I mean, maybe? I don’t know – no, I don’t think so.”
Morgan decided to leave poor Jade out of it and focus her attention on Margie.
After they placed their orders for lunch, she set the stage. “I talked to Luke yesterday.”
“Oh good! How’s he doing?” asked Margie.
“He’s good. I talked to Teresa, too.” Morgan took a sip of her coffee. “I asked her if she’d seen anyone from the old zombie movie.”
“Oh, is she still working with some of those people?” said Jade.
Morgan resisted glaring at her. Jade knew what she was doing – and she should stay out of it if she didn’t want to be involved! “Yeah, some of them. She hasn’t seen or heard from Chet since she left the island.”
Margie chuckled. “Well that’s good news. Maybe he’s given up on his directing career.”
“Maybe. I asked her if she’s seen Lenny around.”
Margie cocked her head to the side. “Lenny?”
“Yeah – you know. The guy that Amanda tased?”
“You’re on a first name basis with him, are you?” Margie said with a smile.
“Well, yeah. Chief framed his mug shot and hung it up in our house. He’s like our fourth roommate.”
“Well I hope that Teresa hasn’t seen him.”
Morgan shook her head. “She hasn’t.”
She waited, watching as Margie placidly mixed sugar into her iced tea and tidied up the used napkins around the table.
Either Margie learned how to play it cool, or she really didn’t know anything else.
Shoot.
“So I guess that’s good. No Chet and no Lenny. The only person that Teresa saw was Chet’s dad, but that was on the – ”
“What was Mr. Benzini doing in Vancouver?” Margie said.
Morgan paused. She’d never mentioned his name. “Oh, he’s not in Vancouver – she saw him on the news. With some politician who’s helping people at the border?”
“Oh, how strange.” Margie took a sip of her tea, but it was too late. Morgan spotted the pink flushing into her cheeks.
Well, well. It looked like Benzini was a lead after all.
