ELEVEN

Takingthe elevator up to her floor was a balancing act.

She wanted to touch him, and he wanted to touch her.

He didn’t say a word, at least not one that she could clearly hear with the rush of blood coursing through her veins.

It was only a short trip to the fifth floor, but like any kind of anticipation, time crawled and Kay held her room key in one hand and the fabric of her dress in the other. It would only be too easy to turn and reach for the buttons down the front of his shirt.

And in the mirrored reflection of the elevator doors she couldn’t even see his hands and suspected he’d grasped his hands behind his back to keep him from touching her.

It was wrong to wish that he’d keep his hands on her shoulders, or her arms.

Even better for him to step up behind her and slide a hand around.

DING

The elevator doors opened, and Kay flashed a look toward the LED sign over the control panel.

FOUR.

The man that got on was Doctor Macmillan.

“Kay! I’m surprised to see you.”

A voice came from behind her. “We’re headed up.”

The flustered doctor in the doorway looked from the well-lit elevator controls to the man standing behind her. “I’m sorry, did you say-”

“We,” Gibson stepped up beside her, his arm almost brushing hers and forcing the doctor to take a step to the side.

He wasn’t quite outside the elevator car, but there was quite a bit of space between them.

Kay let her breath rush out in a soft sigh. “Sorry, Mac-”

“Uh, I didn’t know that you had… that you had a friend staying with you.”

Gibson stepped forward again and Kay watched him crowd the other man out of the car. “Sorry, we’re headed up.”

Kay would have had to duck under his arm if she was a bit taller, but with her petite height, she could just lean out from under his arm. “Have a nice night, Doctor Macmillan.”

“Uh, sure. You too, Doctor Hata.”

Once the doors closed on the man’s confused face, Kay jabbed Gibson in his side. “That wasn’t all that nice.”

Gibson turned toward her and crowded her against the wall of the elevator.

“Did you want me to be nice to him?”

Kay felt a shiver roll through her spine, but it wasn’t fear.

It wasn’t anything like fear.

It was adrenaline.

It was excitement.

And damn the intoxicating scent of his cologne.
