“She needed to clear her head, I figured it would be good for her,” I tell him, feeling the need to defend myself all of a sudden.

“You don’t need to explain yourself to me, you know I’m a Hailston supporter all the way.”

“Hailston?”

“You know—Hailey and Weston. I think she’s good for you.”

“We’ve been over this,” I tell him. “It’s not going to happen.”

“That’s not what I heard,” he smirks. “Sounds like the dirt wasn’t the only thing getting a good soaking earlier, if you know what I mean.”

“Dammit, Chance, what the fuck is that even supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, nothing,” he says, raising his hands in mock surrender. “The ranch has eyes, you know that.”

“Geez,” I mutter, rubbing my temples. “Just drop it, okay? It was a momentary lapse in judgment, it won’t be happening again.”

Lies. Or at least, I hope it was a lie, because I knew damn well that I wouldn’t be opposed to that kiss happening again. I just needed to make sure that Hailey and I were on the same page, and that it wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment thing that she would come to regret.

I couldn’t get a good read on her, and something about that drove me nuts. She seemed to be getting closer with Chelsea, Debbie, and Rhonda, which I saw as a positive. I could tell she still hadn’t completely abandoned her fight or flight mode, as ifshe still wasn’t willing to accept that this was her home now. I wanted to break down her walls, to see what she was like when she wasn’t battling for control all of the damn time.

Hailey Sorrels was an anomaly. She was… not what I had expected. And somewhere between the time I first met her and now, I had started to see her differently. And I had this funny feeling in my gut that this girl would become my undoing.

Chapter 18

HAILEY

I step out of Weston’s truck after a drive back filled with awkward silence. I hadn’t been able to look Weston in the eye all dinner, still mortified by what I had done earlier. Rounding the truck, I let Gypsy out of the back, her and Maverick taking off running through Weston’s front yard.

“Well,” I tell him, wrapping my arms around myself to brace from the chill in the air. “Goodnight.”

I turn around, ready to get inside the trailer and scream into my pillow, but something pulls me back before I can even take a step. Weston grabs me by the ponytail, spinning me around and crashing his lips to mine. It only takes a second for me to melt into him, my lips parting to let him in as my hands press against his hard chest.

He kisses me hard, devouring me in a possessive way that makes butterflies erupt in my stomach. It’s rough and demanding, yet passionate and tender at the same time—and I need more.

I grab him by the shirt, pulling myself into him as his arm wraps around my waist.

“I’ve been wanting to do that all night,” he breathes, a yelp escaping me as he lifts me up by the backs of the thighs and walks us over to the hood of his truck, setting me down on top of it.

His lips crash back on mine before moving down to my neck, kissing their way down to my collarbone.

“Weston,” I moan.

He pulls away, meeting my face.

“Do you want me to stop?” he asks.

“No,” I breathe. “I was just going to say we should move this inside so we don’t get interrupted again.”

A wolfish smile spreads across his face, right before he lifts me once more. My legs wrap around his waist as he effortlessly carries me to his front door, whistling for the dogs to follow.

He manages to get the door open with one hand, the other one holding me up against him. I don’t even take the time to look around his living room, our lips meeting once more as he carries me to what I can only assume to be his bedroom, shutting the door behind him before dropping me onto the bed and bringing himself down over me.

Our kisses are frantic, both of our hands exploring each other, the heat of the moment engulfing both of us completely.

“If we do this, it’s a one-time thing,” I say between kisses. “And we never speak of it again.”

“Agreed.”
