Les looked from her to the door, to the other side of the bed, then back to her.

“This side is closest to the door,” he explained. He could see what she was about to ask, so he answered before she could, “If someone comes through that door, I want them having to go through me before they get to you. I’ll sleep on this side.”

Rae-Rae watched him for a minute before she smiled brightly and scooted over to the other side of the bed.

CHAPTER 11

Raelynn

Somethingabout him wanting to be between her and danger was really freaking hot. She watched as he prepared to join her. He shut off the overhead light, then went to the bathroom and asked if she liked some light when she was sleeping.

“I do, but I have a nightlight by the lamp.”

He turned off the bathroom light, closed the door, then came over and finally slipped under the covers beside her. Reaching over, he turned off the lamp and her mini lava lamp came on automatically in the dark.

“Cute,” Les commented, “Very you.”

“Yeah, the hippie chick could never be tamed,” she confessed with a laugh.

“Good.”

Les wiggled a bit, then reached behind his head and pulled out Sami. He smiled fondly at her friend.

“Nice to see you again, Sami. It’s been a long time.”

Raelynn giggled as he reintroduced himself to the sloth.

“Oh, I’ve been good. Have you been guarding our girl?”

He held the sloth up to his ear as if Sami was telling him a secret, then whispered back, “Yeah, I know all about her stubbornness, but you’ve obviously done a great job.” He gave the sloth a tight hug and said, “You’re welcome. She’s staring at me. I think she wants you back now.”

He wasn’t wrong. When Daddy handed her Sami, she hugged him tight and scooted closer to the man beside her. She inched her way closer a little at a time, not wanting to be too obvious. Apparently, she didn’t succeed since he wrapped his arm around her and pulled her in asking, “Is this better?”

“Mmmhmm.”

“Good, now go to sleep, little girl.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

If anyone had asked, she would have told them she didn’t sleep much and she wasn’t tired, but as it turned out, she fell fast asleep as if his words were a magic spell. Either that, or it was his arms around her.

Raelynn came awake slowly. At first, she didn’t remember where she was and when she felt a solid chest under her head, she almost freaked. But it took only a few moments to remember everything that had happened the day before. As it all floated through her mind, a smile spread across her lips. She checked the time on the alarm clock in the room and found it was morning. She’d slept through the night. She hadn’t done that in ages.

Her fanciful thoughts about magic spells last night flitted back into her mind. It seemed she was becoming a true believer in magic since coming here. The Ranch was magic, the man was magic. She snuggled closer to him, not in a hurry to get up atall. She’d be perfectly content to spend her entire vacation right here.

“Morning, babygirl.”

She heard the words rumble in his chest even as they floated in the air.

“Morning, Daddy.”

She adjusted her leg just a bit and that was when she felt it. She gasped, even as he cursed and tried to reach under the blankets.

“Um, Daddy,” she whispered, “is that...”

“Yeah, sorry, babygirl. I can’t help it.”

“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said quickly. Maybe a bit too quickly, if she was honest, but she didn’t mind at all. Quite the opposite.
