“Nope! I plan on wearing mine home. You should too. We could start a new trend.”

Diego snorted. “I’m glad Mindy is in charge of wardrobe and not you. Speaking of which, thanks for the save the other day.”

“You mean the wrestling thing?”

“Yeah. That was some fast thinking.”

Cameron looked uncomfortable. “Troy backed me up, which I have mixed feelings about. Maybe he’s not so bad after all.”

“He was only saving his own skin. If you have any doubts about what kind of man he is, talk to Mindy.”

“Good point,” Cameron said with a sigh. “Still, I bet you could take him.”

“Easily. And so could you.”

Cameron laughed self-consciously. “No way! Fighting isn’t my style. Remember how I ran from you?”

“In the grocery store? That just proves you’re smart.” Diego looked him over. “You’re not exactly a scrawny little wimp.”

“These muscles are just for show,” Cameron said, glancing in Anthony’s direction. “Hey, I also meant to thank you for helping me with the sets the other day. I can’t remember if I did already.”

There had been woodworking that required an extra set of hands when Diego had assisted him. “No problem. I’m more comfortable with that sort of thing than dancing around on stage or whatever.”

Cameron chuckled. “I have to admit we were all surprised when you auditioned forBeauty and the Beast.”

“I only did that to get away from my mom.”

“Really? How come?”

Diego cocked an eyebrow at him. “You wouldn’t understand.”

Cameron made a face. “You’re not the only one with a messed-up homelife, you know.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.”

Diego shrugged. “Okay. What’s wrong with yours?”

Cameron withered under his stare. “I don’t want to actuallytalkabout it!”

“Good. Me neither.”

They stared at each other a moment before laughing.

“Maybe we should form a club,” Cameron suggested. “We’ll call ourselves the Broken Home Kids. Anyone who joins gets one of our special hats.”

“I have a feeling it’s just gonna be the two of us in that clubhouse.”

“Mindy would join,” Cameron said.

Diego didn’t get a chance to ask why she would qualify, because Mrs. Nishikawa had wandered over, her attention focused on him. “Do you have a moment?” she asked.

“Yeah, of course,” Diego said as he stood.

She led him outside to the backyard. He knew what was coming. She would ask him to do the right thing by staying away from her son. He waited in front of her patiently as she tried to find the right words, already having decided that he wouldn’t argue. Mostly because the decision wasn’t hers. Ricky was the only one who had the right to decide if he wanted to keep seeing him.

“Do you care about my son?” she asked.
