"That's the same thing,” Silvia replied. “You know what he’s going to do with it, right?”

“What?” Mindy asked. Then she must have considered the possibilities because her white skin became even paler. “No! You don’t really think he’s going to…”

Silvia made a fist and pumped it up and down, causing blood to rush to her friend’s cheeks.

“Yuck!” Mindy said, looking mortified.

“Yup. Boys are gross. That’s why I’m moving out as soon as I graduate. I’ve done the math. I donotwant to share a room with Hugo when he reaches that age.”

Mindy’s expression didn’t change. “Oh god! What if Diego thinks I’m doing the same thing withhisphoto?”

Silvia laughed. “He’d probably like that.”

Mindy’s eyes narrowed. “What about Omar?”

“What about him?”

“Didn’t you say he’s always filming you?” Mindy repeated the same pumping gesture.

The smile slid off Silvia’s face. “Hoist by my own petard.”

They ate in solemn silence for a few moments while contemplating such things. Maybe she should ask Omar to hand over all the footage of her, for safe keeping, and then store the tapes next to a bunch of super-powerful magnets.

“What about you?” Mindy asked quietly. She sipped from her juice box before adding, “Do you ever think about him?”

“While doingthat?”

Mindy’s head bobbed rapidly.

“No!”

Silvia expected her best friend to look relieved. Instead she seemed confused.

“Never?” Mindy asked with disbelief. “Even I’ve— Never mind.”

“Wait,you’vefantasized about Omar?”

“I did not say that!”

Nor did she deny it. Silvia would have teased her, if she wasn’t so concerned about the implications. Why wasn’t she fantasizing about her own boyfriend when someone who could barely tolerate him had? Or maybe her friend was a bigger perv than she realized.

“Who then?” Mindy pressed. “Do you like blonds more? What about Graham?”

“The guy in our biology class with the smarmy smile?”

Mindy nodded. “He’ll probably be a car salesman someday. But he does have luscious lips. Or do you remember the life guard at the pool with the freckles?”

“Your supposed soulmate?” Silvia teased.

Mindy shrugged. “I was wrong. But I still, you know, think about him.”

“I don’t kiss and tell,” Silvia said, choosing to deflect, “even in my dreams.”

“I wouldn’t either if I had someone real to kiss. And to do more with. Are you tempted yet?”

“A little,” she lied. “It’s way too soon though.”

“Totally!” Mindy agreed. “I don’t blame you for thinking about it anyway. I sure do.”
