“I don’t know,” Silvia said. “I’m scared someone from immigration will get to him before that happens.”
“Oh,” Omar said before it really sunk in. “Oh!”
“Exactly! We have to get him out of there. I need your help. Please.”
“You’ve got it,” Omar said. “Can you come pick me up?”
“I’d be gone an hour. What if something happens while I’m away?”
“No problem. I’ll figure something out and meet you at the hospital. Saint Luke’s, right? My grandma ended up there last year. Where are you now?”
“Down the hall from his room, but I can meet you by the parking garage entrance on the third floor.”
“I’ll be there in half an hour.”
“Thank you.” Silvia sounded like she wanted to cry.
“Everything’s going to be okay. I promise. See you soon.”
He hung up and returned to his room. “I need a ride!”
Anthony blinked at him. “To where? And from whom?”
He glanced around. “Where is everyone?”
“They left.”
“What? No!” Omar ran to his balcony and threw open the door. Ricky and Diego were getting into a Trans Am. “Wait!” he cried. “Don’t go!”
Diego took one look at him and got into his car. Ricky wavered.
“Don’t let him leave!” Omar yelled.
He ran down the stairs and out the front door, positioning himself in front of the Trans Am with his hands on the hood.
“What are you doing?” Diego snarled after rolling down his window.
“I need a ride! It’s an emergency!”
Diego started the engine and reversed, causing Omar to stumble forward. But he didn’t drive away. Probably because Ricky was still standing by the curb. Omar jogged over to the driver-side window.
“Please,” he said. “My girlfriend is in trouble. She really needs me!”
“Something happened to Silvia?” Ricky asked as he walked closer.
Anthony wasn’t far behind. “What happened?”
Omar hesitated. “I can’t really say.”
“Nice knowin’ ya,” Diego replied. The car lurched forward until the doors were even with Ricky. “Get in.”
“Wait,” Omar said, scurrying back to his window again. Silvia would never forgive him if he revealed her secret, so he invented a different reason. “Her dad is in the hospital and can’t afford to pay the bill. We have to sneak him out of there.”
Diego snorted. “Just have your rich parents write her a check.”
“It can’t wait,” Omar said. “Please!”
Ricky opened the passenger-side door but only ducked his head inside. “She’s my friend too,” he said.
