Diego grinned. “Yeah.”
“And to be equally fair, I only threw a bag of bagels at you.”
“And got me right in the nose,” Diego grumbled.
“Which must have hurt. But after webothmade a mess and you took off, a police officer grabbed me. He hauled me over to my boss who called my parents, fired me once they showed up, and said he was pressing charges. They had to take me down to the police station. I was in big trouble and not feeling very friendly toward you, so yes, I gave them your name. Wouldn’t you have done the same?”
“I never tell the cops anything,” Diego snapped.
“I’m not that cool. I was freaking out.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yes! They took my fingerprints and everything.”
Diego laughed. “I practically shit myself the first time that happened to me. And I was like… twelve or thirteen.”
“It was my first time,” Cameron said, shaking his head at the memory. “And hopefully my last. Anyway, it seems like a dumb thing to fight about after all these years.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Diego said.
“Good. I wish we’d had this talk sooner.Beforeyou smashed my table during the play.”
Ricky tensed, but Diego snorted like it was funny.
“That wasn’t on purpose, man. It was embarrassing. All that crap rolled down the table and landed right in my lap. Because you probably didn’t plane the surface correctly.”
“Ha ha. Just be glad it wasn’t real food.”
“Heh. Yeah. Good point.”
Ricky breathed out in relief. This was exactly what he’d hoped would happen!
“I checked out your sets,” Diego said. “You do good work.”
Cameron blinked in surprise. “Thanks!”
They talked about carpentry a little longer, which was boring to listen to but filled Ricky’s heart with glee. He adored Cameron, and he certainly had feelings for Diego. If they could become friends, it would make him incredibly happy.
“You’re all right, Huxley,” Diego said while handing Cameron a beer. Then he nodded across the fire. “Is that your boyfriend or something?”
“Anthony?” Cameron asked. “Yeah. Are you cool with it?”
“The gay thing, sure. I don’t care. But you could do better.”
Cameron bristled. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Ricky looked around for a distraction and noticed Whitney angling her watch near the fire. “How much longer until midnight?” he asked.
“Twenty minutes!” she cried.
“You don’t want to date someone like him,” Diego said, still locked in conversation. “Believe me.”
“Because of your history together?” Cameron asked.
“Because he’ll ditch you. Just like he did me.”
Cameron tried to laugh it off. “You guys had a very different relationship than he and I do.”
