“Don’t worry about it,” he interrupted.“Will you do me the pleasure of having dinner with me?”

“I’m not sure...”

“It will be fun.And maybe tomorrow I can take you around town and show you everything.I think if you give it a chance, you could really be happy here.”

“But it’s a small town.I doubt there are many job openings.”

“You’d work here.”

Amelia sputtered out a laugh.“What?”

“I’m not kidding, I’ve been advertising for a clerk for weeks. My old one went away to college.”

Her eyes narrowed on him suspiciously.

Kane chuckled and clasped her upper arm, pulling her back toward the door.“Suspicious little thing, aren’t you?”

He pulled a paper off the window to the side of the door and showed it to her.HELP WANTED.

“See, I’m telling you the truth.”

Amelia took a few steps away when he released her arm.“But you don’t know anything about me,” she stated in confusion.

“I pretty much had you pegged within a minute of meeting you.”

Amelia crossed her arms over her chest.“Really.Tell me what you saw?”

“You’re a sweet person who cares about others’ feelings. You’re shy, but when you get to know someone, they will see the fun, smart, beautiful person you are.”Kane took a large step forward and curled his hands around her upper arms when she shook her head.“I don’t know what the hell people have been telling you or what you think you see in the mirror, but you’re wrong. You’re beautiful.”

Amelia blinked back tears.“Please don’t.”

“Don’t you dare cry.”A shiver of extreme unease raced up his spine.

Amelia swallowed and then chuckled at the panic in his voice.“I’m not.I just don’t...”

“Amelia, I think before too much longer you’ll see what everyone else does.”

“What does that mean?”Her tone held a hint of aggravation.

“Don’t you worry about it.Come back to the counter so I can get a piece of paper and a pen.I’ll draw you a map for Jaylen’s place. It looks like it might start to rain, so you’d better get going.I don’t want you on the roads when they get slippery.”

He watched her drive off and shook his head.If he knew his friend as well as he thought he did, little Amelia would be trapped on the mountain forever.
