A curtain of red spread across her face in anger.“You can have little fat Amelia. She’ll no longer be invited to come home because I am going to tell my parents how horrible you were to me because of her.”
“Really?Do you really think they’re stupid enough to fall for your bullshit? And frankly, Amelia has no desire ever to go home or see your parents.Although your parents might change their minds when we start having children.”
Meredith gasped in outrage, turned, walked past him, and out the door, almost falling at the uneven gravel driveway.
“I hope both of you will be happy,” she said in a snide, hateful voice.
Jaylen held the screen door open and smiled. He knew she was being sarcastic, but still answered.
“Thank you.I’ll make sure I tell Amelia you wish us well,” he said, and then chuckled when she screeched.
Her scream was muted when she slammed the car door closed.
Jaylen watched as she fought for control and tried to start her vehicle. He watched as she tore out of the driveway in her fancy little car and waited until she disappeared around the bend before going to look for Amelia.
Chapter Twenty-Four
Amelia laughed as Wolfbit at her heels as she ran from the woods behind Jaylen’s cabin. No, she reminded herself, oftheircabin.Jaylen made sure she called it theirs now. She’d been there for six weeks, and every day brought something new and exciting.
Amelia hadn’t realized how miserable she was until she came to Jaylen’s.Her life before she’d come to the mountain had been one disappointment after another, and she hadn’t truly understood how bad she had felt until Jaylen came into her life.
She was out of breath before she made it to the back door.
“You are such a good boy,” she said and ruffled through his fur, dragging a groan from his throat. She and Wolf had come a long way. They were now inseparable, which amused Jaylen.
She reached for the screen door, stopped, and tilted her head to the side as voices from within the cabin caught her attention.
Amelia froze and stood rigidly outside. She couldn’t be hearing a woman’s voice.Especially a voice she’d hoped not to listen to for a long while, or ever—her sister’s voice. It wasn’t possible.Jaylen’s words drifted through the screen.
“Is that so?”
“Yes.I sent my sister here to let you know I would be here, but not when we discussed. That I’d get here as quickly as I could.”
Amelia bit her lip and shook her head.It was all lies.
“We didn’t have a discussion about you coming. And what about using the phone?”
