“You’ll like this one. I promise. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be right down the hall.”

I watched Devlan until my bedroom door closed behind her then shot into the bathroom. I took the quickest shower in history, before drying off and throwing on a pair of sweats and a tank top. I stuck my feet into a pair of slippers and rushed out of the bedroom to find Devlan.

I stopped in my tracks when I spotted her. If I wasn’t careful, I was going to have a heart attack soon.

“You can’t do stuff like this, Dev. I’m an old man. My heart can’t take all this excitement,” I told her as I rushed over to Devlan holding my little sweet face on her hip.

“You’re only thirty-six. That’s only eleven years older than me.”

“Do you know what I was doing when I was eleven?” I asked her.

“I don’t even want to know.” She shook her head.

“Where is my buddy? In the room?” I asked, walking toward the kids’ room.

Angela’s head popped out of the room almost making my heart stop for a second time. “What’s all of this commotion out here?” she complained.

“Shut up, big head, and come give your brother a hug,” I teased.

“Uncle Steel!” King cheered as he burst out of the room.

“Hey, buddy. I missed you,” I said, scooping him up in my arms.

“My mom said we can move down the road, so we don’t have to miss you no more.”

“That’s good, buddy. I was missing you too. It’s too quiet around here without you,” I admitted. “What made you change your mind?” I asked my sister.

“Her. She reminded me of the importance of having family,” she said, pointing at Devlan across the room. “And you reminded me of the importance of forgiveness. I have to work on forgiving myself for the things I’ve done to hurt the people I love. If you are willing to let me back in, the least I could do is appreciate your open arms.”

“I’m glad to have you back, sis. I will put you in touch with some movers and whoever you need to work with to get settled in. Let me know how you want to go about work. I can find you something to do for me or I can help you find a job. Whatever you need to help you keep your head above water.”

“OK. I think I’ll take a week or two just to appreciate freedom and reuniting with you.”

“Fine with me.” I nodded.

“Come on, Uncle Steel. Watch cartoons with us,” King requested.

“OK, buddy.” I laughed as I fell onto the couch.

“Thank you for being so good to him and the kids.” I heard my sister tell Devlan from behind.

I looked at my princess over my shoulder and smiled when she mouthed “I love you.”

“I love you too, princess,” I told her with a wink.

Devlan

“Wake up, princess.”

Steel’s gravely morning voice caused a stirring in my belly, but that didn’t prompt me to wake up. Being a full-time student and working part time at the day care was kicking my butt. He gave me the option to be a stay-at-home wife, but I declined. I wanted to have some kind of purpose other than serving him. Thankfully, he didn’t object.

Whisper soft kisses on my inner thighs caused my eyes to pop open from a light sleep. My hands easily found the carpet of soft curls on top of my husband’s head. According to him, today was our six-month wedding anniversary. I didn't know six-month anniversaries were a thing, but he was right.

It had been six months since we stood in front of his sister, Kelsea, and our babies and declared our undying love for each other. From that day to this one, we had been living in wedded bliss. Steel wanted to take me back to Bali where we'd spent our honeymoon, but I just wanted to rest and spend the day with him. He worked so much, and I was enrolled back in school, so I valued every second we spent together. With a final kiss to mystomach, he pushed back onto his haunches as he lifted his eyes to me.

“Get up, princess. I have a surprise for you.”
