The sun had fully set outside my kitchen windows, while Victor packed up his toolbox in the living room. “You’re coming up with it, Liv. It’s going to be successful. You never miss,” he said.

“All the kids will sign up,” my mom said, giving my arm a reassuring squeeze.

“Of course they will. Everyone has a crush on Dr. Rhodes,” Lucy added, shimmying her shoulders as her wild red curls bounced. Her red was a shade brighter than my own darker auburn. Her hair was curly and wild to my sleek and straight.

“Of course they do,” Victor said, popping his head into the kitchen, like he hadn’t been eavesdropping the entire time, always playing this overly charming game with me.

I just rolled my eyes.

“Good night,” I said, lifting my margarita high in the air. “See you later.”

“I’ll be by the next couple nights to start work on the bookshelves,” he said casually.

Lucy chuckled under her breath, then mouthed to Mom,Bookshelves now?

“See you then,” I said quickly, not wanting him to see Lucy’s reaction or the way my mom was nodding in agreement. I didn’t want anything to throw off the happy little equilibrium of our renovation world.
