“Jacob Miller. Are you propositioning me for sexual favors?” I whispered.
“I’m just trying to help you out.”
I laughed. “Sure. I think you loved it.”
He smiled. “I think you loved it.”
“I did not love my nose being on fire.”
He laughed. “Which is why we should try it again. How about tomorrow after practice?”
I shrugged. “Sure.” But I was internally screaming. The fact thathewas askingmehad to mean something, right?
“You two make such a cute couple,” Aunt Ash said. “I’m dying to know how this whole thing happened.”
“Yeah, tell us the whole story, grandson,” Mr. Tanner said.
Ah!They were the last people that we could tell Jacob’s crazy fabricated tale to.
“Go head,” Jacob said. “How about you tell everyone the story?”
It seemed like everyone had turned in our direction. Including Axel. Who we’d told the fake story to. So we couldn’t change it now... And I swear Axel looked entertained. Like he knew the whole story was a lie. Even though I knew that he couldn’t possibly know that. My head was scrambled. I hated all these lies.
“It all started with spiked lemonade,” Jacob said. “But I won’t steal the show. Scarlett loves telling this story.”
Traitor!“I actually need to use the bathroom real quick.” I ducked out from under Jacob’s arm and practically sprinted out of the room.
“Didn’t she have a bathroom emergency earlier?” I heard Aunt Bee ask as I ran away. “I hope she’s alright.”
It was better for her to think my stomach was sour than for her to know my whole relationship was a sham.
But...was it? Because Jacob seemed awfully eager to hang out with me tomorrow after practice. And I was looking forward to it too.
Scarlett and the Fake Boyfriend - Chapter 21 – You’re Your Mother’s Daughter
Monday
I couldn’t wait for tonight. But first I had to get through my calculus pop quiz. I sighed and closed my locker.
“That was a heavy sigh,” Jacob said. “Are you not excited to hang out later?”
“Oh, no, I am. I just hate going to Mr. Halifax’s class.”
“Are you not ready for the pop quiz?” Sophie asked. “Because you can’t fail another one.”
“It was a C.” I hadn’t failed. “And I think I’m ready.” I’d studied all night. But my thoughts kept wandering while I was studying. And of course Axel coming had distracted me.
“Scarlett, you can’t keep failing just to get into Mr. Halifax’s pants.”
I just stared at her.
“Sorry,” she said and shook her head. “I don’t know where that came from. Mr. Halifax’s constant rejection is starting to drive me crazy.”
Jacob laughed. “If it’s a pop quiz, why do the two of you already know about it?”
“Because apparently Mr. Halifax likes giving Scarlett special treatment because he’s her kiss thief,” Sophie said. She groaned and looked up at the ceiling. “I hate my life.”
“Why, because you know that your homecoming date and I are going to win homecoming king and queen?” Gigi said. “So embarrassing for you.”
