The trapdoor started to lift and then fell back in place with a thud.

Well, if I was going to be caught anyway...“Great,” I said. I was wrong before. It would be better if Briggs was here to help me with the intruder. He was actually trained for this. I was most certainly not. “See you in a minute.” I hung up the phone just as the trapdoor started lifting again.

I grabbed a big jarred candle as a weapon and waited for the zombie to come up.

The trapdoor fell again and there was a groaning noise.

Crap. It really is a zombie! And if there was one thing I’d learned from that stupid scary movie, it was that it’s better to be proactive. I wasn’t just waiting around to be eaten. I flung the trapdoor up and threw my candle down the hole.

Well, more like let it fall out of my hand.

Because as soon as I saw the top of Axel’s head, I tried to stop. But it was too late.

The candle fell right onto the top of Axel’s head and then shattered on the ground below.

Oh no. “Axel?”

“What did you just throw at me?” He rubbed his head and laughed.

At least he was laughing. “It was more of a gentle toss,” I said.

“Ow.” And then he laughed again. He looked up at me. “You look pretty tonight. Big brothers can say that, right?”

Why did he keep referring to himself that way? “Yeah, I guess.” Liam never told me I looked pretty. But he was also my annoying younger brother, so who knew.

I heard the sound of footsteps in the hall. “You need to get back down there.”

“No thank you.” He tried to climb up. But he seemed very wobbly on his feet.

“Axel, get back down. Briggs is coming.”

“Briggs likes me.”

“Does he?”

Axel shrugged. “Everyone but your dad likes me.” His words were a little slurred.

Sophie was right. He was definitely drunk. And as if he wasn’t drunk enough, he pulled a flask out of his pocket and took a sip. Which almost unbalanced him. He was lucky he didn’t fall overthe railing of the spiral staircase. No wonder he’d been making so much noise down there.

I grabbed his flask out of his hand. “Briggs is coming to check on me. If he sees you in here, he’ll find out about the trapdoor.”

“Hey, give that back.”

“No. Get down.” I tried to put the trapdoor back in place, but Axel didn’t move. “Axel!”

He hiccupped and grabbed the flask back.

For the love of God.“Just...stay there.” I abandoned trying to get him back down the hole in the floor and ran out of my room, closing the door behind me.

Briggs had only been a few steps away from reaching my room.

“Everything is fine,” I said. “Just a false alarm.”

“Were you just talking to someone?” Briggs asked.

“Nope.”

“I swear I heard you talking...”
