“Yeah. Boss Banks tell him. Boss Troy call Pres Falcon, heask,I come, help show push to more can hurt.”

“Thanks, and thank them for me. You said it perfect.”

He nods. “I research, spinal sever low. Risk to damage nerve higher is low. I have surgerysimulator, you want chance I practice.” He indicated the trunk of his body.

“The severed nerve is lower and you could try to repair damage to the higher?” I ask for clarification. Germany said I could gain some function higher that may gain me more feeling but it would be inches. The diagram they showed would give more bowel feeling with no actual nerve gain over anything lower than the very top of the pelvic girdle. In other words, I’d feel when I need to shit better but gain nothing more.

He nods but doesn’t add anything.

I nod. “It sounds good but I have a lot going on right now.” Stress right now isn’t good for anyone in my new world.

His hand goes up. “You tell to me when. I practice to hobby. New technology mean always later options open new door.”

“Thanks. You’re all amazing with technology. That new may come to a better way with no risk, more gain and time for my new to be old.”

He smiles. “Hope to us all.”

He drops his chair and runs. I go to push the wheels on the chair I’m sitting in and realize I’m walking again. Putting my hands on the table I push up and walk toward the pool. The new normal is never that easy to adjust to but it’s fun sometimes.

Katie is a good hour away. I can’t wait to show her the new skeleton. I open doors everywhere now too. I love technology.

Shit. I breathe deep while walking toward the pool. Maybe there is a way to get her help. She isn’t cowering in a corner but help could raise her confidence. The chair and farm did that for me. I’ll ask Alder when he’s not swimming.

Chapter Six

Three days

My name being screamed has me up and running. “Vinny!” The wretched cry feels like it’s shredding everything it passes as it makes it out of his mouth. That cry sounds like a pain that should never come from any child.

I look for Shadow and Light seeing Shadow’s view. Fuck! Vinny is down on the walkway just outside the gate. Turning, I jog then make it to a run. His out-of-control bawling pushes me faster. Shadow is trying to lift him up but the boy looks boneless. “No. Vinny, no, no, Buddy. You are not alone. I’m here, I’m here, little Buddy.”

I push the gate open and bend but fallback before I can lift Vinny up.

Wápáyu appeared with his hands out. “Sorry, sorry.”

I shake my head no. “Thanks for following him. Let your mom and dad know you’re here.”

“Dad took Mark to Aylen and Citiali. Mom said we can bring Vinny to you but Ôkatuq carried Shadow and fell at the other gate. Vinny ran when I tried to help my brother but ‘Tuq said don’t leave Vinny alone.”

I hug Vinny tight. “You did good, Wápáyu. Thank you. Get Ôkatuq and bring him to my house for a drink. We got Vinny. We can all show him we’re here for them.” The kid is gone. I close my eyes. “I got you buddy.” Vinny is still bawling and I don’t think he hears me, but I don’t let go and keep talking. “Shadow’s mind is bouncing everywhere. Let’s get you both a drink and some calm.”

Shadow jumps up hugging us both in his goofy K-9 way. His heart is where it needs to be but his movements are too heavy, too awkward and keep tears from forming in my eyes. He’s a funny and good Brother.

“He’s a great Brother but doesn’t know how to hug standing up. His hind legs don’t bend right for a hug.”

I kiss Vinny’s head when Shadow huffs at me. “You know it’s true and you know I’m just giving him sound to hold on to. Roll with me, Brother. I need to clean his knees up. He’s got scrapes but I didn’t see everything.”

He runs ahead of us sending ‘first aid’ through the chip. Whatever gets us through the next is good. I’ve thought about how he’d react but didn’t expect it to be so soon. They just told us Leon had a couple of months two weeks ago so I had time to prepare them better, or so I thought.

Kristos walks through the door withWápáyu and Ôkatuq. “He’s bleeding.”

I nod. “He fell on the walkway before the gate.”

Wápáyu takes the first aid kit from Shadow. “I stopped to help Ôkatuq but he said not to leave Vinny. I saw him fall but didn’t make it.”

Kristos ruffles his hair. “You did perfect. Raid is on Ops for me. I just got here too.” He turns me. “I can clean him up while you calm him down.”
