He backed away from the door and dropped the box on the bed before grabbing his pants.

I followed him inside, hovering at the door. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think.”

“That’s pretty fucking obvious.”

“We were just?—”

“What, Syd?” The chill in his eyes made the lump in my throat expand.

“It was stupid. The condom broke and I just blurted it out. I shouldn’t have, but it was probably going to be fine. I just bought it in case.”

“And you let me touch you again and again without a condom.”

“I know,” I whispered.

“Because you knew you could take care of it.” His voice was tight.

It wasn’t something I’d ever thought I would have to do. And I wasn’t entirely sure I could bring myself to actually take it.

“Xavier.”

“No. It’s your choice. I can’t—” He shook his head and grabbed his shirt and keys.

“Wait. Can’t we talk about this.”

“What’s to talk about. I wasn’t a thought in this entire process, right?”

Shock rattled me. “You…wouldn’t you want this?”

He paused at the door. “What I want doesn’t much matter.”

Then he was gone.

I sank to the floor as tears rolled and the lump became a sob.

Xavier

The ice descended before I could process it.

Plan B.

Another woman taking the choice away from me.

Like Sarah.

The name echoed in my head and chased me to the elevators. It opened and Claire as well as another blonde were inside. They both were wearing tennis gear.

“Xavier.”

“Hi.”

She frowned. “What’s wrong.”

I shook my head.

“Something’s wrong. Did you two have a fight?”
