Thankfully, she nods without protest. “Agreed,” she sighs.
As soon as we’re moving, I feel my dragon shift closer to the surface. He’s furious, radiating rage and bloodlust. He wants tokill Kozlov, wants to tear every vampire in that building apart. But more than that, he wants me to mate with Shadow.
Mine!
Mine!
He wants me to claim her completely.
What the fuck!?
I’m so happy to feel him this close again, but I have to set him straight.
No!
We can’t mate with Shadow. She isn’t for us.
Nothing has changed. Not a single thing. My dragon snarls his displeasure but settles.
As I pull away from the curb, glancing in the rearview mirror, Shadow suddenly starts laughing. It starts as a quiet chuckle but quickly builds until she’s practically gasping for breath.
“What’s so funny?” I ask, though her laughter is infectious.
She tries to speak but breaks into fresh peals of laughter. Finally, she manages to get the words out between giggles. “I just…I never thought that sex would be the answer to our problem. That sex would literally save us!”
The absurdity of it hits me, and I start laughing too. It feels good, even though it probably shouldn’t.
“You’re right. Drugs suppressed our beasts and fucking like rabbits brought them back again,” I tell her.
“Rabbits.” Shadow shakes her head, her eyes glittering as she laughs hard.
It’s a few seconds before we compose ourselves.
“I really hope we don’t get pulled over by the cops,” I say, glancing down at my blanket-wrapped waist and her tiny white dress. “I’d have some serious explaining to do.”
We both look at ourselves and start laughing all over again.
When we finally manage to get ourselves under control, Shadow’s expression turns serious.
“Can you take us somewhere where we can shift? I need to be in my scales again, especially after being so suppressed. I hated that, Fury.” She bites down on her lip and tears well up, but she blinks them back. “I didn’t think we’d make it out of there alive.”
“Neither did I there, for a moment. I hated it too. Not being able to feel him. There’s a place on the way back to DC,” I tell her. “A state park with plenty of remote areas. By then, we should both be able to shift.”
For now, I just want to put as much distance as possible between us and those bastard vampires. As I turn onto the main road, turning back, I catch one last glimpse of Kozlov’s building in the distance.
The whole top floor is aglow. Every light is on.
They know we’re gone.
Of course they do, and I’m sure they’ll come after us.
I press harder on the accelerator. Let them! This time, I’ll be ready for them.
This time, they won’t catch us off-guard.
Bloodsucking fuckers!
