She blinked at him and I knew he couldn’t continue. His voice was cracking, I was surprised he had said so much before the hurt and pain of it all returned.
“We broke up with you, so you would go. The only thing keeping you here was us. You hated your parents, then hated them more when we broke your heart. You blamed them, you cried for days. We couldn’t stand seeing you so upset… we asked Galen to compel you. To take your memories of us from you. To help you.”
Her brow puzzled as she looked between us. She didn’t remember anything about us… about vampires, shifters.
“Mr. Donovani, he’s a vampire.” Mekhi added so she wasn’t confused further.
But from the look on her face, that was a whole lot of information we just dumped on her and adding the vampire thing pushed it over the edge. She wasn’t processing it well. I gave her a few moments as her expression changed, she closed her eyes and we all watched her as she swayed a little. Her brows furrowed and when she opened her eyes she looked over to Mekhi.
“The good looking history teacher at Port Willow High is a vampire.”
I smiled, that was Clare. She had said the same thing when we told her about the supernatural world. She knew he was “too hot for a teacher,” but she took it well. Like she seemed to be now.
“Just… just let me get this straight.” She looked at me, then Mekhi. “You were both my boyfriends, who broke up with me then got a vampire teacher to take my memories away of you both so I would leave and go to college.” We both nodded.
She understood everything, I knew she was smart. Once she had all the information she would understand why we did it. And hopefully forgive us quickly.
But then her gaze landed on Frankie. My lip turned up into a smirk.
“You’re not a college student?” His eyes dropped to his feet as he shook his head.
“Pharmaceuticals… drugs. You were talking about drugs when I asked what you were studying.”
“I can explain,” she held her hand up and shook her head. She turned to me again, I could feel the sadness, the heartbreak and betrayal. I wasn’t the only one.
“Please, Clare. Let me explain.” Frankie begged.
“You, and you.” She pointed her finger at Mekhi and I. My body hunched lower, making myself smaller, knowing this wasn’t going to be good. I could scent her emotions. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy explaining all this to her and her forgiving us on the same day. But I never meant for it to happen in this way. She was upset and not thinking straight.
“You got a vampire to take my memories of you both so I would leave Port Willow and go to college.”
We nodded. Not speaking a word, letting her do all the talking, as we knew she needed to process this first, then we could beg for her forgiveness.
Her lip turned down and she closed her eyes again. When they opened they were glassy. I moved toward her but it was like she stared right through me. Like she couldn't see I was there. She blinked and held her head.
“You are wolves. Holy shit. You are wolf shifters. I wasn’t seeing strange visions. They were real. These are my memories. The ones you stole.”
“Visions, Clare bear?” I asked, did she have visions of us? Did she remember us? Was that supposed to happen, I didn't know, but this was good. Good news for us that she was remembering who we were.
But her glare was now aimed at us.
“I thought I was going crazy for months. Seeing you both in my dreams, then randomly I would have a flashback.”
She pointed to Mekhi, “I braided your hair, I knitted you both beanies and we were together. We were in a relationship, we weremates.”
My heart started to race, she did remember us. She knew we were mates, my wolf wanted to mark her. I wanted to wrap her in my arms and kiss her so much. I had missed her so much. God, I missed her.
“You remember us, Clare bear. This makes me so happy.” I moved towards her and she stopped me.
“I remember fragments of you. Only small parts. You stole my memories. You made me believe I was crazy. I’ve been struggling the whole time at college, not understanding the work… because you didn’t just wipe you both from my mind.
“You wiped anything I learned in the past two years.”
Chapter23
Clare
Everything didn’t make sense… then it did. It was like I was seeing in black and white, then color showed up and painted everything for me.
