Ada

Noah was waitingfor me again; well, I think he was. It was a little quiet though, well more than quiet. He didn’t say anything at all. He just stood over to one side and didn’t speak to me. I wished he would either act normal or go inside. It was making me nervous with him just standing there… or looming there, since he was so tall.

If Lexi wasn’t coming to school today I would have moved away from him already. I had asked her to come earlier so I didn’t have this problem, but I was just grateful she had been let out of house arrest… That’s what I was calling it anyway.

Galen had been to school and checked everything out yesterday apparently for her, so everything was good to go. Even though he messed with her grades so she didn’t need to be here, she still wanted to come. I was glad. I missed seeing her.

I saw her get out of the dark car. I bounced a few times on the balls of my feet, excited she was here. Smiling, I held my arms open wide and she ran straight into them and hugged me tightly.

“What took you so long?” I hissed under my breath, not wanting Noah to hear me with that shifter hearing. As we pulled apart, Noah took that as his turn to come over.

“Hey Ada, Lexi. I heard about the… you know. And it worked. You don’t smell anymore… Oh wait, I mean like you don’t smell like a—” Like a what? He was making a lot of hand gestures as he talked, and I would have been mad at him for telling Lexi she smelled, only that it was so cute the way he fumbled over his words, I think he was trying to be nice, but it made it sound like she smelled bad. She smelled good to me. He just stared at us, his brow furrowed. It made me want to hug him.

“I’m sorry, Lexi. I’m gonna go now.” He hitched his thumb towards the doors and, before we could even reply, he ran up the stairs, fast.

“I assume that’s the reason you needed me here earlier?” Lexi asked. My brows raised at her.Ugh… shh.I wanted to tell her to be quiet but she just had a grin on her face. I shook my head and looped her arm though mine, pulling her close.

“Maybe… Let’s go. School just got better now that you’re back.”

In school,I noticed Lexi looking at the big pink banners with “Prom” written on them. I smiled. I had been in a meeting and we were doing a masquerade ball theme. I thought it would be an amazing theme because then Galen could come. They had already bought five tickets. I wasn’t sure how it would work with her bringing all four. I was curious, was she gonna pick one or turn up with all four? I wasn’t sure what her plans were, but I was really excited to go dress shopping with her.

“So… do you take one or all of them to pr—” Lexi cut me off, shaking her head, her eyes widening.

“No, no… prom. Like, totally forget about prom, and like, I’m busy then and I can’t go.”

How could she be busy? They bought her a ticket. Well, they all bought tickets.

“Lexi, they already got their tickets and yours. Even Galen.”

I was confused now. I thought she knew that they got her a ticket. I was really excited when they did that. I had changed my role with the prom committee so I didn’t have to do as much work and I could spend more time with Lexi getting ready and stuff. I was going to prom, even without a date. I couldn’t not go, it was one of those things I knew I would regret if I didn’t do it.

Lexi took a step back from me. She seemed confused at the fact they bought her a ticket. I just assumed she knew about it, that she was excited to go. Was this like the same thing as the Lovell party? She didn’t want to go to that, but then I half pressured her into it. I think we can all agree with that. She wouldn’t have wanted to go if I didn’t make a big deal about it.Fuck.Needed to change the subject.

“We’re gonna be late, hurry. English is boring, but it’s gonna be fun now you’re here.” I dragged her to class and we sat in our usual seats, the same seat when she first came here. I was glad she sat next to me. That was the best day of my life. I only realized then that none of the shifters looked at Lexi weird like they had all those other times, so I told her and what she said next blew my mind.

“I can’t talk about it here, but Tobias organized awarlockto do this spell thing on me so I didn’t smell like a wolf shifter’s mate anymore. I guess it worked. Noah, well… he was trying to tell me I didn’t smell like his mate anymore.”

Oh wow, I forgot that was why they always looked at her funny or acted odd around her. Aww… Noah was trying to tell her she just smelled normal and he messed it all up. I guess he was trying to say she was now just as human smelling as me. Now that she would only smell human to everyone she shouldn’t have any issues with anyone supernatural trying to take her.

“So, this warlock…” Lexi pinned me with a can’t-talk-about-that-now look. I nodded but I was so curious, I had so many questions. Like, was hemagicmagicor, like, just rocked up smelling all funky and gave her some herbs? What did this warlock do? I was going to have to get this out of her later. I wasn’t gonna forget this one. I wondered if I could meet him. Would he have spells for me?

Mrs. Jeffery was handing out some worksheets and skipped right past Lexi and me and I put my hand up straightaway.

“Yes, Ada?” she asked as she continued handing it out to other students.

“Um… you skipped us?” It was clear she did, we didn’t have any papers in front of us.

“Yes, you have already passed the class, both of you. I’m surprised you’re even here today.” Everyone looked at us. Say what? I looked to Lexi and she mouthed, “Galen,” to me. I was surprised at that. He wouldn’t change the other guys’ grades, but he did for me. Why? But I nodded to her and held my tongue.

After we left English, we walked around the halls after the other students had gone to class. It was kind of cool. I thought about going to the library, but this was fun. Lexi apologized twice to me about Galen changing my grades, passing me. It was a bit of a shock, I must say. Would’ve been nice if he had told me, but it just meant I would have more time to do other things. I had amazing grades, so I hope he made sure to reflect that in his changes.

Oh, I could do so much more with all this free time.

“Look, I don’t mind he did that. It’s just given me heaps more time to organize the prom.” Without having to worry about school, I could make this the best prom ever, and it would be epic.

What else could I do while I was at school? Hell, I didn’t have to be here anymore. This was a whole game changer. I wonder if I could take other classes, one that could help me get into nursing.

“You’re on the prom committee?” Lexi asked.Huh?I turned to her. I thought she knew that. I gave her a thought-I-told-you-that shrug. ‘Cause pretty sure I did. Didn’t I? Did this mean she wanted to now come?
