She cocked her head to the side. “Maybe, maybe he was just telling me he loved me. he drank my… he will be extra protected right?”

I didn’t know, I was the last person to understand all that was going on with her magic angel blood and its effects on vampires. I let go of her hand, rubbed her shoulders free of the tension and then pulled her into a hug. I felt her body trembling against mine. But it felt right to hug her, we needed this hug, both of us. She could draw from my strength, and I would do the same from her. Together we could lean on each other and get through this.

When she took a deep breath and pulled away, I could see the fake ass smile on her face, but I ignored it.

“Ada, you should be a nurse, not a cop.” I chuckled and shook my head. What? No, I had always thought I would be a cop. But a nurse, it was an interesting idea. How did the thought never cross my mind?

“I…I didn’t take any classes for that. I’ve always thought I would be a cop, to help people. I never thought I could be a nurse. I thought blood and gore would scare me.”

But last night I wasn’t scared. Not at the blood and stuff anyway.

“You handled yourself pretty well last night, and there was a lot of blood. Galen can help. He’ll get you into nursing school if you want.”

Did I want to? I wasn’t sure. I smiled and hugged her. There was yelling and movement as I pulled away.

There were some naked older men hurrying inside, they carried a young guy. Oh, oh… was that Luca? No… I think it was a younger brother of his? He was in a bad way. He had so many bites. I snapped to attention, running towards them. I started wiping the blood away with a towel.

I knew from last night they could heal from shifter bites, but I needed to see if there were any vampire bites. That would be a death sentence.

“Get him over here, lay him down.” He needed to be closer to Lexi, and it would be easier to see him when he was laying down. When he was placed down on the makeshift bed he wasn’t moving. I checked over him, Kiara was wiping blood away while another woman was checking with me. Looking over, I could see them… I gasped. One, two, three. I pointed them out to her.

This boy had been attracted by more than one vampire, or by the same one, over and over. I pulled up his wrists and felt for his pulse, he was so pale, the pinkness that should be in his lips was turning purple. I dropped his wrist and ran to Lexi. She was holding her throat as she shook her head. Oh god, no… she needed to stay with us. We needed her.

“Lexi, I can’t help him. Can you please help?” I pleaded as I pulled her hand. She was frozen as she watched him. This wasn’t good, this was so bad. She was the only one who could save him.

Zara came rushing into the room and ushered Lexi forward to the boy. I watched as she dropped her knees in front of him. I held my breath, willing this to work. There were so many bites.

“It’s too much, I don’t know where to start.” Her voice trembled as her hands reached out and hovered over his skin.

Zara knew what to do and seemed to have the right words. “You have the power, you have strength within you, Lexi. You put your mind to it and you can conquer the world.”

Lexi placed her hands on him and her body stiffened. I wanted to help her, to hold her… but I didn’t want to stop her focussing on healing him. She started to slump as tears rolled down her face.

My hand reached out to hold hers, I wanted to her to know I was here, I will always be here. When she threw herself back, her voice croaked.

“It’s just… too much. I don’t know if I can save him. I don’t have that kind of… energy.” Zara was trying to help her sit down but she looked bad… I couldn’t ask her to do this anymore. It was killing her.

“Blood? Lexi. Do you think your blood would heal them?” I knew it had for Galen, and it didn’t take this big a toll on her body.

“Get a knife,” she whispered.

Saint was pissed off tonight, upset with Ada, with Huxley… even me. So being his partner tonight definitely wasn’t my choice. He had requested me. My Pa thought it was a good idea, he thought it would help us bond more, in case we both ended up owning the affections of Ada. I think Pa lived in another time… affections.

If anything, I was starting to hate Saint more. He was snappy and aggressive and he seemed to be taking it out on me the most. I had done nothing wrong, he didn’t have a claim on Ada, he didn’t even speak to her today. She was allowed to choose who she wanted, if she didn’t want me, I would be upset. Oh, I know I would be more than that. I would probably be acting like he was right now, but it was her choice to make. And I think… I think she will let me ask her on a date. After my birthday of course.

Saint charged towards some wolves, not even staying in formation. We weren’t supposed to leave this are, because we were protecting the side of the house where the kids were. We were told to stay here, and not allow ourselves to be drawn out. This was the opposite of our orders.

And just like they had planned, they had separated us. Four rogue wolves descended on me. I tried to alert Saint, but he could see it now. That he was now caught in a trap, they had succeeded in their plan. Saint was now pinned near the tree line, I watched as he tried to get back to me but three of them had him cornered there.

I had been bitten by the rogue wolves, over and over, their teeth ripping my fur and flesh. I tried to break free, but they were trying to kill me.They were killing me. I didn’t see the panther coming, until it was too late… it was if the world was now running in slow motion as the slick black animal leapt towards me and landed on my exposed belly. The sounds it made had my heart racing. Its huge jaw opened wide, teeth exposed and I knew this would be it. Once it got me, I knew I wouldn’t get out of this alive.

Just as it went to sink its teeth into my throat, its body was jarred sideways. Saint was there, blood pouring from a wound on his head. He had deflected the panther from me and it landed with a loud thud as it hit the house.

There was just growling, teeth and claws everywhere. I clawed my way out of the wolves just as Saint tried to fight them off me. He wasn’t as large as me, but he was faster. The window shattered as we all rolled through into the guest bedroom. The panther launched itself towards the other side of the room, trying to get through the locked door and into the main house. If he got through that door he could get to the kids and I couldn’t let that happen.
